The bottom line is you need to know what states you are going to run in. The green book is usless when it comes to oversize. Every state has a max length, anything hanging over the rear of the trailer will at least require flags and most sttes require at least a beacon light on the rear of the load. Off the average the max length truck and trailer is 75' over all, but then again this varies state to state.
EXAMPLE: WV need a permit over 75' plus a rear escort.
AL over 80' need a permit and rear escort
Cant remember but there are a few states that wont allow any front or rear over hang on a 53' trailer at all.
Your best bet is to get a copy of the OD book and read e=each state requirments

if permits are required it should state on there what is needed,at the very least get a beacon for the rear and signs front and rear with 18"x18" red or orange flags, anything over 75" in tennessee will need a rotating beacon on the rear

every state is different on oversize requirements. either call each state oversize permit dept. or talk to a permit service. asking them questions about what your hauling is free!

One totally correct answer, out of the lot.
Saying there are no length restrictions means we just waste money every year on hauling blades.
Saying this or that much overhang is fine, on a 53' trailer, is totally incorrect in most states.
Overall length may not be restricted for a 53' trailer combination in most states, but as soon as you go over that 53', it's a game changer.

OP, you first need to be more specific in your initial posting, then you need to realize all this information is worth exactly what you paid for it.

From my experience, each state has different permit, sign and light requirements, but federal max cargo length is 53'. It doesn't matter if the load has an overhang on the front and or the rear of the trailer (pertaining to OAL) it does affect wether or not you have to put flags and lights on the rear of the load (over 4': one flag at the rear of the load, over 2' wide and 4' overhang: one flag on each of the rear corners of the load)

I would say that even if you have the beams loaded in front of the front of the trailer you would have to have some kind of permit, because it's over 53'. What the stipulations of the permit might say are up to the state.

Not sure what blades have to do with it.....the OP asked about 60 ft beams on 53's.

Not sure about all the replies, but I don't recall saying anything about all states. I stand by my statement that 60 ft beams are legal on a 53 in PA and NY on qualifying highways.

Yes. Great. Thanks. Moving right along, however.....the question was about 60 ft beams on a 53.

Yeah, I hit the Wyoming state line with 60' rebar, and the company was saying no permit required. Well I went in to check before I removed the banners and flags, and sure enough the company was wrong. And WyDOT was not happy since I hadn't called ahead ( that's another story in itself ). Y'all best get to studying each states rules if you want to get into OS/OW on a larger scale.

Oh, and wyoming is limited to 60' feet, but of course rebar is not an exact product. Mine was 60' 6", so a permit was required.

So did you also get the 200.00 penalty for not calling or just a strong arse chewing?

Like others have stated, when in doubt check your self...

Your allowed up to 4 feet over hang. Anything over 4 feet needs oversized permit. Any over hang needs a 12 inch square red or orange flag.
