protrusion could be the blame. My neighbor with his previous columbia with 14.0 detroit had to replace the head gasket 4 times. Protrusion is the blame and he didn't knew it. i adviced him but he blames the egr.

With that many miles the block probably need to be shaved to get the gasket to seat properly. metal expanse and contracts with temperature. The original head surface was the same as the block. but putting a new head on a motor with 1M plus, the new head surface is going to be different then the block. because the block surface is going to remain the same as it was with the old head. The surface doesn't have to off by much to case the new one to leak'

Thanks for the replies, appreciate it. I'll try to find a good cat shop.

CAT engines use a spacer plate between the block and head. Liner protrusion is set by the spacer plate. Have the block decked, get a new spacer plate, and a reman head.

Pick your shop, go in and ask them if they can cut the top of the block for shims. If they give you a blank look or tell you that the block has to come out of the truck walk out the door. My guess is that it will be #5 but not always. Cat service manual spends a lot of time and many pages on the subject of protrusion and how to measure it for good reason.
The top of the block can be cut for shims with the engine in place. A stainless shim goes under the liner and sets the height. I prefer to do all 6 so I can set them all to exactly the same height. New spacer plate every time. No need to deck the block which means pulling it right out and apart.
I know the Cat dealer here in Dallas can do the job.ymalish Thanks this. -
Guys i have a new spacer plate from last head gasket replacement.

If the head gasket is gone again because the liner has sunk into the block the liner will have been moving up and down all this time. Think vibration rather than movement you can see. The question is: did it affect the spacer plate in any way that will cause a problem later? The answer is always I DON"T KNOW. So I replace them- every time= I now know that the spacer plate is not a problem. You can take a micrometer and measure the plate but it is time consuming and fussy work. I think you are money ahead to just replace it. But ... that is me.
