Of course you do. I was 28 and had a abysmal work history when I got my CDL, but still found good work. You'll have it even easier at your age because you have much better excuses than I did for being unemployed. You may not get the best job right out of school, but there are plenty of decent companies who will give you a chance.

 

Don't worry, you will be hireable after CDL school. Get all the endorsements plus TWIC and a passport.

 

Flatbed is great and I really enjoyed doing it while I did.

They "recommend" you live within 50 miles of a terminal, but doesn't say "must."

Melton Truck Lines hires at 21 yrs. old.

Start a list of flatbed companies that hire at 21 so you will be prepared to submit applications.

 

Do not get all endorsements. Only apply for the ones that you will need for the job you are seeking. if you want to pull a tank then doubles/triples doesn't apply and is a waste of money and time. if you want to go the standard route of pulling reefer or dry van then you won't need any at all except hazmat if the company you go to work for requires it. You can have a tank endorsement with a hazmat but that will solely depend on if you plan to haul hazmat loads or food grade. Flatbed doesn't require anything special either. You have good excuse right now for the unemployment but you will loose that excuse sooner or later and usually around 23-25. Then you need legitimate excuses such as doctors orders, family loss etc.

Don't get your TWIC if you don't need it. I.E. loading at ports and other areas controlled by homeland security. If you rarely load at those places then it's an expensive waste of money and waste of time and hassle. You can still get in with your license, it just takes longer and you have to be escorted throughout the property. I didn't get any endorsements when I got my CDL but a couple years ago I gave the tank and hazmat thing a world for the oilfield. It didn't fly (they like to discriminate around my area a lot) so I went into flatbed. CDL came up for renewal and I let it go since I never used it and even an extra $.03 a mile for a hazmat load wasn't worth the time or trouble nor would it constitute enough money to pay for itself. As I said, if you don't need it, don't get it.
