Hey, everyone!! I was inspired by FLB's tarping post to share my recipe for homemade strap protectors!! They're fairly simple to make if you have access to a table saw and band saw.

To make these I used old, 5" fire hose and cut them on a band saw into foot long sections. After that, I just set the fence on my table saw to half the width of the hose, set my blade height so it would only cut through the bottom half, and cut a slot in one side. Be careful and watch your fingers.

Fire hose is insanely durable and these straps are easy to use and will last a very long time even against sharp edges. I've include a couple pictures to give you all a visual. :biggrin_25520:

I like the idea of the slit being cut on one side. I think I should probably do that to my firehose.

Correct. I have a cousin who is a firefighter here in Indiana. Fire houses will often have fire hose that is lying around waiting to be disposed of. Just make a couple calls. It shouldn't be to difficult to find.

You go through some blades but you can cut them with a utility knife. Probably won't look as nice as jldilleys but it works. I'll probably slide a piece of 1x4 in mine to cut mine open.

I wouldn't cut a slit in them. If they slip in easy, they can slip out easy. I'd rather have it shimmy down the strap than fly off the trailer if a strap comes loose.

I've stopped by every fire house I've walked by in the last few years, and they always look at me like I'm crazy for asking if they have any hose they're throwing out. They don't seem too happy about being woken from their naps, either.

I used to work for the fire department where I still get old hose from my friends at the station where they repair the hose. I can get all the 3" I want, but old 5" is hard to come by. I use the 3" for product protection from chains. Never thought of the 5" for straps but looks like a great idea.
