The way I do it is simple. I take my fixed costs and variable ( fuel which isn't really variable because I know pretty close what that costs per mile) and add everything up and divide by 5 which is number of days I plan on working. I then know that I need to earn xxx dollars a day to break even I then add my profit and come up with my minimum and if that's not met I don't book it. I figure my fuel based on 500 miles a day add fixed add a salary not cpm because I get paid same every week. That leaves me 2 days to earn revenue if I sit waiting on loads I want. It works for me

What if you don't drive 500 miles a day due to traffic or delay at customer or a breakdown of some sort? Fuel IS a variable cost because it can and will change every day.

I dont haul a load that don't meet my minimum so if I take a load that meets my minimum dollar wise but is less than 500 miles then I just make more because I spend less in fuel.. There's always unforeseen circumstances so I plan on the known.I never base my pay or minimum off of 500 miles per day just the amount of fuel I'll use and I do that at 7 mpg which I always get better than 7 mpg. Fuel is a variable cost if you don't keep track of your numbers and mpg as well as your daily miles but if fuel cost me .48cpm to drive 1 mile it also cost me .48cpm for all 500 miles so where's the variable. thats why I base it on 500 miles if the load is less I make more if the load is more I know before I book it and figure that into the minimum I will pull the load for. If you are running on such thin margins and you figure you get 8.1 mpg and thats what you base your fuel on then yes it will vary daily... I get about 8.1 mpg but figure my fuel for every load based off of 7 mpg so I always spend less on fuel than I figured. I am saying what works for me because it works for me. Maybe you're different and like to cut it close I don't I also wont haul freight that costs me money.. Some will also some run 8.75 hrs every day and do no reset but I'm not the one. I do it my way because it works and I'm profitable.
