This my first time getting my own tags and a few of the questions I'm not sure of.
I'm only registering a tractor.
Unladen weight I'm assuming is tractor weight. I put 17k (07 shaker columbia , mid roof w/ detroit 60)
Gross registered weight? (I'm not sure what this is because It also asks for GVRW and GCWR ) I know what GVRW and GCWR are, so I put 80k for all three.
The dealer sent the title work directly to dmv and I didn't really get to look at the old title.
It ask for axles (I put 3... it's a dual axle tractor) then it ask for combo axles ( I'm assuming the amount of axles when pulling a trailer?) not sure if I should put 5 or what?
I was told letting virginia dmv estimate my miles didn't really make much difference the first year? I registered all the coastal states on the eastern seaboard, but I'm only probably going to run Virginia and N.C. on a regular basis. I'm trying to avoid a hassle of getting permits for an occasional run outside of my normal states.
It asks do I want a overload permit? The dispatcher says they never knowingly take over weight loads (I know that has you laughing), but most of the work will be local. I won't cross a scale that often. Moving Inter modal 53ft boxes from rail to a local retailers in the area. It cost a extra 250 to be rated up to 84k....thinking I should take the $250.00 hit just to be safe!
Lastly It ask for Carrier responsible for Safety.....I put the company I'm leasing on to. I'm pretty sure this is right because this question also asked for Tax ID Number and US Dot. I don't have my own authority or a DOT number and the company makes sure your safety stuff is compliant.t
I called dmv helpline but the young lady didn't convince me she really new some of these answers either.

Yes you cant get IRP tag until its lease/on with co.using their DOT # and insu. is turned on to your new truck, the overweight permit is cheap but you can get 90,000 also per year,you can find the list of est. MI. by state in the inst. book.

Its been a while since I have done it but here is what I think.
No on the overload permit. I haven't needed it since I got my plates.
I think what you register the tractor for is maybe 55,000.
20,000 for each drive axle and maybe 12,000 for the steer axle.
Like I run VA and NC and I never run into any trouble with the DOT.
Sounds like a lease purchase you made. I could be wrong.
Only register VA and NC. You can always add other states with a few clicks on webcat.
Go to www.dmvnow.com and sign up for a webcat login. You can add states,do ifta, and order overload permits.POINTDEXTER Thanks this. -

Use their estimate for the states you think you might be driving in. Remember, next year when you register, in 2015, the new IRP plan will be in place and you won't have any states on your cab card, you will be registering and paying based on where you went in the previous 12 months. If you just put the 2 states you will need to fart around getting trip permits. After 2015 there won't be trip permits with the new IRP thing.
Your combo is 5 axles.
In VT we just register the GCW for 5 or 6 axles.POINTDEXTER Thanks this. -
I would do the extra weight as a precaution. 250 is a good deal. But remember, that will only be in the state it was issued in unless the other jurisdictions recognize it. Here in VT, when registered for 99k, with the state of VT, you need another permit for NH, but in Maine, they recognize the VT registered weight on the cab card. Going the other way, you need a non-divisible load permit to go into NY.

You can add states and get a new registration within seconds on webcat. You will also use it to renew your registration.
