one big problem for me is around here most companies want you to do nyc and nj and long island.
no way in hell no matter the pay would i put myself thru that bs.
what sucks for me is my verifiable history, i worked for my family most of my life and they dont take family as refrence so its almost as if im a newb. from there i went to a different family company for 9 years and that wasent always TT, i went from roll offs, to flatbed with moffet, to hauling excavators.
so my history is spotty. im thinking i should take the job and if worse comes to worse i can switch accounts when something comes up or worst case go to another company.
but i need to get my 6-12 months plain and simple. i have other opprotunitys to be home every night but juggleing the commute to work (gas) then the 4am start and home at 6am then having crap sleep because of the twins being up at night doesent get me alot of sleep. ill sleep better in the truck.
the other job is 1000 a week but after taxes, gas on the commute, insurance and the rest of the crazy taxes we in connecticut have that goes down to 700 easy and for that ammount of hours thats just not worth it. thats why im going back and forth. being home with less money and sleep or being awaywith more oney and more sleep. one job is cake dump trailer work with a awesome company and a brand new truck and the other is a huge conglomerate that some say just sees you as a number.
being with "family companies" all my life im thinking it wouldnt be such a bad thing just being a number.
drive, unload, go to the next and do the job.
not to mention, having to get ahold of all these other companies, doing interviews and stuff is rough.
if i was unemployed it would be a different story because i would have the time on my hands. but i work full time and i absolutely have to, gots bills to pay! so quitting and taking time to interview is rough.
    jesus, such a delima.
thanks for all the advise guys, for real, keep em coming good or bad i appreciate it all.

I am with Werner... I am on the Menards dedicated account...
I get a lot of flack here when I say that I am happy at Werner..
    But, it is true..

For some, like myself, I cant stand to just bump docks.. I like having some actual physical work to my day... which is why I am on the menards accounts... I like driving for a few hours then havi g a little 30 to 45 minute work out pulling my tarps and staps off then getting them folded and rolled... then just wait for the unloading to be completed so I can go grab another load... so, I like the extra work, and it saves me time and money of a gym membership.

I have never dodne the dollar tree or family dollar accounts.. but, we had a driver who came to the menards accou t from the dollar tree account.. he stayed about a month and is going back to dollar tree.. he likes that account better... anyway, I did talk to him a little about it.. he said he made good money and the work wasnt that hard... he said most of the injuries on that account are drivers being stupid or careless... same as with the menards.. we just had a driver fall off the top of the load.. he was having trouble pulling the tarp off so he climbed on top the load and tried to u tarp it from there... he lost his ballance and fell off the load..

I have tarps get hung up or snagged on something and have to climb up and free it.. if you are carefull it is no big deal.. the other day I had to climb up three times... tarp kept getting snagged..

Anyway... the thing I like about werner is they have several accounts, so if you find you dont like what you are doing then get on a different account..

I have been with werner since the first of the year and have been consistently making over a $1000 a week since I got off the trainers truck...

    Good luck to you....

Also, be aware that you'll be backing in to tight spaces from busy streets.

The Werner Trucks I see in southern Oklahoma are pulling Dollar General trailers. But Dollar General or Dollar Tree, it is probably the same thing.

I have noticed on the back of those Werner Trucks are some big, heavy roller conveyors. You may have to manhandle those heavy rollers on that account, I am not sure. Those Dollar General stores in my neighborhood are very small and located in small, congested strip malls. You will have to maneuver around parking lot traffic, and may even have to pull out in the street to back up. And just as Justin Sane just said, the docks are tiny. If you can handle that, go for it.

Basicly on dollar tree you get to your stop (usually a pretty tight shopping plaza. Unload your rollers ( generally stored on the back of tractor) set them up and unload onto rollers and the store employees remove the items from the bottom of the rollers, the further you go into the truck you add another section of rollers. After your first stop you usually leave them in the trailer for your next stop (unless you feel like mounting and securing them onto the back of your tractor) usually 2-3 stops per trailer. My brother in law enjoys it and the money.

I trained on Werners dollar general acct in the midwest. Training on that acct was great (learned how to back into tights spaces not meant for a 53 footer) learned it wasn't for me. Alot of the store employees are generally lazyand take forever. You usually get stuck with a slow employee on the day you are running behind just luck I guess.

Like I said in my previous post werner is not a great company to work for but not that bad either. I read a lot of the horror stories and was real nervous at the beginning. I have been with them just over 8 months and they have been good to me. I was a northeast regional driver at first and there was no money in that. Complete joke. If you find a good dedicated acct. Like the dollar tree or jeld wen acct (I am currently on the jeld wen acct) you can make pretty good money. I work hard don't really complain and never have any issues. I cannot speak to the issues and horror stories you read about but I can say that overall my experience has been positive

That is one thing I really like about Werner... 2 years on trucks and 6 years on trailers... the equipment is good... plus, it get serviced every 60 days... before coming to Werner I ran for a small family owned company, only had 10 trucks... most of which were old werner trucks... werner use to run the trucks for 500000 miles then sell them.. but now they are running them for only 2 years.. and 6 years for the trailers...

I know eventually I want to try that Boat hauling account... but, right now I am really very happy on the menards account... on this account I am home every night and weekends... and as I said I am nappy with Werner... I do like working for a company with all the resourses... I can get a hold of safety, logs and the shop 24 hours a day 7 days a week.. and I do like that... I have had a few bumps.. but, they got resolved right away...

With Werner, drive safe.. dont hit things, dont back up into things and dont get tickets and it is smooth sailing... which to me is not nard to do... but, surprisingly a lot of drivers are not able to do that...

Not to start an argument but I have never heard of this 2 uears/6 years thing. My truck is over 2 years old (most of them on my acct are) and most of the trailers I haul (different 1 every day are over 6 years old. I recently asked when I could expect a differnt truck (just curious cause I don't want a new 1 I like my pete) and was told they try to get 500,000 (or close to it) out of the trucks (mine currently has 370,000.

I do have to agree about the 60 days. It is nice to get that done. Also the only drivers on my acct who have issues are the ones that don't like to run hard and hit stuff LOL

If you are with Werner then just go to the media tab on your qualcomm and watch the video. ..

They are just starting the 2 year fleet... 500,000 was what they were doing.. but now are phasing to a 2 year fleet

Also.. you know if you do the quarterly safety things and watch those videos they send over the qualcomm you get credit to spend at the company store...

Anyway, that is where I found out about them going with a 2 year fleet and 6 years for trailers... just go to the media on your qualcomm and watch the video. ..
