And this is the reason why drivers bust these amazing trannies.
They're rolling on the freeway at normal speed (65-70) then traffic slows down out the blue, driver panic brakes and grabs a handfull of the shifter kicking the /red-gray/ switch down and then lose the gear (but these bad muthatrucka trannies would take the gear) and then all you can hear is... "Bam"...

we had all 18 speeds and 6Nz cats/acert cats. we had guys breaking the suspension hardware, bust differentials....never had a peep out of the transmissions. we drive them as 9 speeds all the time. take it out of OD to back up.

All of the newer .73 13/18's are in direct in high split. Low split is an underdrive, the only overdrive in these transmissions is the top gear in the main box, as the main is turned around from the factory (They use the 'X' shift tower that reverses them to the normal pattern.)

Cowpie runs his very high geared truck in 16th, as that is the direct gear in an 18 (11th on a 13 speed.)

Are the .86 transmissions the same, direct in high split? Also, what dates are we talking about here when we say "newer"? I remember when cowpie had the glider built, it was 2.56 or something like that. I'm thinking holy smokes, I drive a 4.11. So his rig only has OD in what we call 8 high, and the 8L is an underdrive? Mines a little older, 2004, and I'm stuck calling them "direct" and "over" even though it seems I should get with the program and call it high and low.

It may not be, still it is great we go over this and lots of others. We never stop learning and there's always something we may miss

No, the .86 ( "A" ratio ) trannys have a direct main box with an overdrive high split. By newer, any of the RTLO-series with the "B" ratio, which goes back 20 some years, now.

Actually, the highest two gears are both overdrive ratios, 8L is main box in OD with the aux in underdrive, but the final drive is still an overdrive. 8H is main in OD and aux in direct. But they aren't technically double overs like the old RTOO-series, where both the main and aux had OD gearsets, and you actually had 3 OD ratios: 7H, 8L, and 8H.

Mine has 2.64 diffs. The top two holes are .86 (17th) and .73 (18th). 16th is direct.
