I sent a piece of news to Rolf Lockwood the other day showing that SWIFT had finally decided
that after taking a beating in the market, (they were down 18%) - that they would actually look
at INCREASING rates to lure back good quality drivers to the industry!

The alternative has been to bring in more foreigners. I wont go into that any further as there is a lot of other threads on here that that address that issue.
Its still a very small step, and I recognize that. But its in the right direction. I try to find anything that is positive within the trucking industry.
There's enough bad news to fill up threads of multiple forums, and I guess when a major player essentially admits that pay is THE issue, its admitting fault
    with the Foreign worker program.

This just proves what I, and many others, have been saying for a LONG time. The problem of low wages is NOT the fault of the company, it lies with those that work for them at those low wages. If people would stop working for peanuts, the companies would HAVE to raise their wages to an acceptable level or go out of business. Good drivers are the single most important asset a trucking company has. The day that drivers figure that out and quit working for slave wages is the day that ALL trucking companies will start paying a fair wage. the sad thing is, while some drivers drive for peanuts, there are other companies that pay very well that can't find good drivers. It's a goofy industry.

    I agree.

Canada should stop supplying America with cheap oil and gas.
Let them pay fair market value for it. Right now they get it for around $2 less a barrel than what it sells for on the open market.

Well, how about that. I'm always running around on here ranting about wages and unpaid detentions, etc., which is what would eventually get me to hang up my keys, as it has for so many other drivers that have taken up drywalling or roofing or anything that pays them for the hours they worked, in full. I considered welding really long and hard because it's registered as a skilled labour, which is what we all know truck driving truly is, when followed to the letter of all operating laws there are for us.

    http://www.cantruck.ca/imispublic/H...entDisplay.aspx?Section=Home2&ContentID=13662

"CTA: Recognizing Truck Driving as Skilled Occupation Key to Jobs Strategy

Temporary foreign workers program won't fix driver shortage, but essential to fill seats
(June 26, 2014) -- Truck driving is a skilled occupation that should not be lumped in with burger flippers and other low wage/low skill jobs in order for the industry’s jobs strategy to work.
    ...
Regardless of whether a company uses the TFWP or not, Bradley says employing Canadians is always paramount and there is a very clear industry consensus that truck driving should be considered a skilled occupation. That fact that it isn’t, says CTA, is a key impediment to addressing the driver shortage, which could reach 33,000 in the for-hire trucking sector by 2020"

I hope the larger companies are hit hard by the lack of labour because it's the giant companies that pay the least (but fight the movement to raise us to 'skilled labour' status the hardest). Stepping in the right direction is great and I'm waiting for the big leap.
