When you got your CDL recently it didn't say it on the paperwork anywhere, but you also signed up to be a PROFESSIONAL DRIVER. The public expects you to drive your truck like a professional, not a wreckless manic with an 80,000 lb poorly guided missile. I just ran I10 across Texas, and guess what? Where the upper speed limit is 80, there's more buzzards than people. There's also a lot of slower traffic that doesn't have "PRIME Inc." painted on it. If you're going to drive a 80,000 pound truck at 80 mph, everyone expects you to have the skill and professionalism to do so safely. I rarely find low time drivers to have the ability to do that at 55 let alone 80. Let's hope you're not headed for trouble.Last edited: Aug 26, 2014
Ditch Doctor and PChase Thank this. -
While I can't speak if it's changed in the past few years. But during my time at prime, company trucks were governed at 58 on the pedal and 62 on cruise. So they're pretty much just as slow as all the other big carriers.
But while we're at it, let's sit back and think a little more. Look at the drivers that are being hired these days. The guys that take two hours to do a straight back, the guys texting while driving, or ones that can't seem to figure out how to make a wide turn. Do you really want them going 80mph? -
milskired Thanks this.

I'll check with the cows and see if they are ok with a little more time in that hot trailer...

Ok, back on topic..
While Prime trucks are slow I wouldn't call them sorry..
IMO they look like a well maintained and modern fleet but I have never been in one and most certainly never will... -
At least Prime does pay better than most.
I'm with Crete and they have the same kinda of basic Freightshakers...
Seems if you want better pay, you gotta drive cheap ugly trucks.
An example is Western Distributing Transportation.. you can get to drive a truck like this:
but get this.. they require 3 years experience and the pay is....... 32CPM.

A noob coming out of Prime's school driving this truck
Can earn .42CPM right away once released from training... http://www.primeinc.com/paid-apprenticeship-cdl-training
seems you can't have the best of both worlds
Higher pay to drive cheap truck
or
Lower pay to drive a fancy truckLast edited: Aug 27, 2014

Last I knew Western paid on the hub that does make a difference (but that's another whole disscussion), but I do see your point..
-
It's ridiculously low pay for someone with 3 years OTR experience.
If I stay at Crete another two years I'll be at .46CPM
who in their right mind would take a near 30% pay cut to drive a nicer truck? -
I didn't know Western switched that's a shame.. -
Team drivers at Western get paid LESS per mile than a noob coming out of school starting at Prime

sure it's only by .01 but still, that says something
