That's a heck of a first post.
I've been doing this oil field thing for a few years now and yes it has its ups and downs. They will lay off people when things slow down. What you need to do is make yourself as valuable to your company as possible so they will keep you around. I work with several guys that have been with our company for well over ten years and one guy that has 34 years here. It is possible to have a good long career at the larger service companies.

Be prepared for a looooooong hiring process. With little actual contact from real people. Lots of emails with tasks and directions.
I received my offer email on August 17th taken my drug test sept 5 background check sect sent in. Still waiting for an orientation confirmation. I'm glad I didn't put in my notice at my current job when I got my hiring email.
I'm about to just forget it if I don't hear anything soon.
I just went through extensive background check and drug/hair testing with my current employer in May and didn't take nearly this long and way better communication.
Not impressed with baker hughes so far

 

OT is going to be based on the payroll calendar(and possibly but not likely state law).

Generally the company does the best it can to screw you out of as much OT as legally possible. For example your payroll calendar is from Sun-Sat but you start your hitch on Wed.

 

It will be more than that.

My company for example. I start on Mondays. Payroll goes from sun to sat. At the end of my hitch I have a time sheet for 2 days at straight pay rather than ot.

I work 120 hours a week for 2 weeks in a row but my time sheet only reflects that 1 out of every 6 weeks or something like that.

It is against the law in CA to do that but I don't know of any other state that has that protection
