I would think the parole board would let you visit on home time and would work with you since you are trying to get a job.

I think if I was going to give advice I would have to know the details. The OP said he was not going to sugar coat anything but did not tell why he killed someone or the whole story.

Before I hired a paroled killer I would want to know the whole story. Maybe he killed his boss ???

I am all for second chances but the dead person does not get a get a second chance.. I hope it is all in the past and you have changed and you get a job driving and things work out for you.

If I knew the whole story I could answer differently but if you killed someone and meant to do it you should have never been let out of prison and should be on death row. IMHO

Makes it very very hard to answer, if it was an accident , no problem.

    Good Luck

When I worked for a roofing supply company we had a Class A driver that ran a conveyor truck. Local work slinging bundles of shingles and other roofing supplies. He had a murder conviction.

Not suprising how brave and mouthy people get hiding behind a keyboard. We are all just one decision away from being in the same place.

It would be nice if you could actually ask a question without the thoughtless, needless clatter of the empty minded, But that would just be too much to expect.

Maybe you missed my point, witch is why I asked for the circumstances, if a fight happened, yes I've been in a few, in this case, I don't think he should have to suffer for the rest of his life, but if it was something else, we'll! Then yes he should, I life is gone and will never return to their family and friends, maybe car accident, or something, but receiving a life sentence make me think maybe not accidental

Thank you everyone for all the replies and information. Very happy to hear that trucking companies can hire me, despite the background...I wanted to find out if the past would automatically disqualify me from driving.

I fully understand that I have to work harder, and get scrutinized more closely, than other employees...after being on parole for just over 14 years I've come to expect & accept lots of doors being closed in my face, etc. I fully understand the opinions/feelings of others in regards to what they feel I should and should not be allowed to do...my intent was not to stir up a bunch of drama and I apologize to mods and other users if some feel that's what I've done. To be honest, if I did not have this in my past, and were sitting on the other side of the desk, I would have some of the same opinions as have been expressed.

But I wanted to find out up front if my past was going to automatically disqualify me from driving OTR...as was said by several in their responses: need to know BEFORE putting out a bunch of money for schooling. Having to put out 4 - 5 times as many apps. to get hired, compared to someone without this kind of past, is something I've resigned myself to -- I have been having to do it since 1999. I did what I did and will pay for it for the rest of my life...but as has been pointed out, it will never undo what happened.

Again, thank you for the responses, and no one should be chastised for expressing their opinion regarding whether I served enough time, should have been released on parole, deserve to be allowed to drive, etc. This is a free country, and we are all entitled to freedom of speech, correct?

    Be safe out there.

If he was released after ten years then we are clearly talking about an accidental killing from a very poor decision

I work with a guy who is a convicted murderer. He is a former gang member that shot a rival gang member. He spent 12 years in prison before being released early. He served his time and changed his life. I never would have thought that he had killed someone or even did time in prison if he didn't tell me.
