    Good afternoon Drivers!!
I've been rolling some thoughts around in my head as I search for the next trucking career. I've been out of trucking for 16 months now (when I was driving I had a little less than a year OTR) and I'm a little concerned about just jumping back in a truck after my sabbatical. I sit here and think, Geez, you've been out long enough that you will be a little rusty in terms of my actually driving abilities. Yes, I still remember everything, but actually getting in the truck and picking up right where I left off concerns me.

I really think if I had a couple of days in a truck it would all come right back to me and all would be fine. My concerns are if a company wants me to do a driving test and I don't do to well?
Do you think I should start back out with a company that has refresher course, maybe puts you back with a trainer for a few weeks?
Any insight or opinions would be great!!
    Thanks, Sly

Some companies require a refresher course. You was still considered a newby up until the last day you drove before taking a 16 month vacation from driving.I think I would take a refresher course.Would'nt be a very good day if you fail the test and have to head all the way back home especially if you're miles and miles from home.

After my break (about 3 years), I went to work for Werner, not the best company, but they put me with a trainer without a refresher, and after awhile, it was like I never left, then drove with Andrus out of Saint George, UT, and they said my month with a trainer with Werner was fine and gave me my own truck, I never had any real issues with them or getting back into driving. However, I think if you do feel nervous about it in any way, take the refresher course. It will only help you.
Good luck to ya and welcome back. Drive careful out there.

You never really got past the newbie stage with only less than 1 year....but , we are all really rookies I think , even those that have spent their entire lives driving. Never learn it all. I'm betting that in your particular case though , with the experience you do have , you'll more than likely be better off doing the refresher course thing. I would wager it will probably be a must. Good Luck and welcome home!

Put in some applications; most companies may require refresher and also offer refresher.

Check with McCurdy M.W. & Co. in Houston. Not sure what type of trucking they do, but worth a phone call.

Also FFE & Western Express & Paschall Truck Lines all offer refresher & hire in Houston. Many other companies offer refresher also.

    Thanks!!!
I just got off the phone with Schneider. I want tanker and they will have a recruiter call me tomorrow.
From what they told me, with my Tanker, Hazmat and TWIC already they would send me out with a Trainer for 3 weeks, then back to Houston to test out and if all goes well assign me a truck and run their Regional Tanker Division (TX,OK,NM,LA and some CO). Out Sunday-Thur. and home on Fri and Sat.

    I guess I will see.

Schneider tanker is excellent. Congratulations. Much better than those I listed.

I hope so!! I've heard they are pretty good for a large carrier and I heard their training for tanker was good as well.

Tanker work is easy money! I've delivered to several places along the Texas Gulf Coast & it sure beats reefers or dry van.

Yep, my limited experience with Prime for 8 months was Reefer. I'm looking forward to no bumping docks and scaling loads....haha!!!
