If they'll hire you right out of CDL school then that would probably be your best option, the company I run for won't touch anyone with less than 2 yrs experience.
realsupatrucka you sure you dialed the right number?? lol
When I applied I got in pretty quick and easy.
There are 2 kinds of loads:
    System & Dedicated
On dedicated loads you deliver and go right back empty.
System loads are the ones that minimize your deadhead and generally make you more $$$
Once you deliver, you'll go to a tank wash or terminal and either get your tank cleaned or drop your dirty one and hook to a clean one. From there you'll go pick up another load.
    I run the system.

    Eddie Kingpin Thanks this.

I worked for Service Transport in Houston for about a year…….I left with a 2 week notice and could go back if I desire……they always treated me nicely……I made great money with them, and when I move back to Houston (after I sell my house in Las Vegas) I will go straight to them and reapply.

My pay rate was 23% of the load……I loved the Virginia Beach loads…..had one to Canada and back (before they required a Passport)……of course all of this was prior to 9/11/2001……I've read where the carriers for HazMat have new restrictions that I never had to work with.

I actually served as a trainer for them until about a month before I left.

I remember long waiting times to load and unload, but I rarely touched hoses…….I only used my pump (every truck has one) maybe twice. The only time I had to suit up with full body PPE was during training……most customers did not want the driver touching their loads…….Operators in the plants did the loading and unloading…...

Of course, I followed their policies and procedures and worked for them in the way they wanted me to.

The only place I HATED to load were Huntsman (former Governor of Utah) plants……they would take all #### day to load product.

Did a ton of loads from Houston to just south of Baton Rouge……most were easily accomplished in one day.

As far as interaction with office personnel, I mainly dealt with a night dispatcher and supervisor……he could be a little crotchety……but, once he learned that I loved to work he and I got along great.

If you're wanting tanker experience this is the company that I would hire on with……they weren't perfect, but I never had a problem that couldn't be resolved without a phone call. Some people are just not suited for yanking tankers……I just seemed to fit there.

It's been so long since I worked for them so I can't provide current information, but I was thankful that the time I spent with them was accident free and very easy to adapt to.

    Thanks,
    B3

Most tanker companies have very restritive policies on having riders along. I think as a newbie, probably not. I run for Dana and we can have riders twice each quarter and I run regional, out and back. And no pets, period.
