I'm currently in a 2013 Kenworth t680. I am a company driver and was given the truck to use with 90k miles on it. It has 3 12v outlets one of which did not work when I got the truck. While using my laptop via a 300w power drive inverter I shorted out one of the 2 remaining outlets. I am worried the last outlet will also short out or maybe cause a fire. Being a company driver I cant use an inverter that plugs directly into the battery. I think my only option at the moment is to use a generator, but I dont know how that would work. Where do I keep it while it runs? Does anyone have a solution?

well you could look behind the glove box and see if the fuse is blown before reinventing the wheel

I assumed it was a short because it was so hot when I unplugged it after it stopped working.

If you're running a heavy duty "gaming class" machine, you're going to have issues trying to run it through a "lighter plug inverter". I assume you are not trying to run anything else along-side the laptop on the same circuit? Do not put a larger sized fuse on the lighter plug circuit then the fuse panel calls for.. The internal truck wiring can only handle so many amps before it gets hot and then you have REAL issues.

Also, could be the driver before you had power issues and only had UNDER-sized fuses available and this is why your 300 watt inverter is blowing fuses. Again, make sure the lighter fuses are of the correct size. Not too small, not too big.

And, it's all too common for many of the cheaper inverters to have bad/faulty internal overload protection, thereby blowing truck fuses where a circuit breaker should have kicked off first.

As others said, chk the fuses. Another tip is to charge while in transit . Truck on voltage is higher and thus will require less Amps for the same watt output. (V*A=watts). If plugged in while truck is off remove batt. Don't try to charge laptop batt and use it at same time

i run a 400 watt invertor. and have never pulled my batteries out of my laptops. i'll even drain em while watching a movie and plugging speaker jack into the radio. eliminates the static noise. then plug in and surf the net.

one of my laptops, won't even turn on if the battery is out while plugged in.

If your a company driver it's not your truck. Report the problem on your daily log and make sure the company knows.

How hard is it to get to the truck batteries?
Run a wire(s) down to batteries while on the road..run your inverter and then stop a mile from the yard on your way in and remove the 2 wires to battery.
    Problem solved.
