I picked up my new volvo which comes with a webasto bunk heater. I turned it on and there was a odor i couldnt exactly pin to what it was. I did some research and found several people talking about exhaust leaks, fuel leaks, carbon monoxide etc. In my situation this was not the case, turns out it was more like a plastic/rubber new smell but strong enough for me to research it. So if this is helpfull to anyone in my same situation, if your heater has been sitting for several months or is new i suggest turn it on HI full heat and full fan speed for 45 min to an hour with the windows open to vent out the smell, let it run its course and allow it to blow it all out and after that should be good. That is what i did and it worked for me.

If the heater isn't used for an extended period, dust will build up on it and cause the odor that you described when it is first used. Just run it on high for a few minutes to get rid of the dust build-up. If it's used frequently after the initial use, that smell shouldn't occur again.

It's fine. Mine does it too. After a while it goes away, it's kinda like a new car smell, lol. After a little while it stops that. Nothing to worry about.

Go to Walmart and in the lamp section get a small bottle of kerosene. Get about 4' of rubber fuel line or any rubber hose from Home Depot. Pull the line off the fuel pump and put the other hose on to the bottle on the ground. Run heater full blast until it's all gone. Kerosene burns much hotter then diesel and will clean it out.

If the vent is faced down towards the floor or blowing against anything rubber and it's on high heat you will get a rubber smell
