I agree 100%. Tell a guy who just passed you that it's ok to come over....nothing. Give out a bear report....nothing. Tell them there's a gator in the road....nothing.

It's sad really. I have mine on all the time, but it's pretty much useless anymore.

And you Sir are a problem in this industry! We truckers are more or less co-workers. Therefore we should be able to communicate with each other at any given time (especially in inclement weather/winter). Over the years, I have met one to many drivers out on the road with your mind set only to look the fool (when a operating cb would have saved their day) time and time again.
Much of this "I don't need it/ don't miss it) is pure self denial and hypocrisy. Many of your type happen to be today's trainers who also leave out other important driving/driver points to their students. Remember, the cb is not about I, but about US/WE working together.

btw: How/What is your TV, Twitter, Facebook, Social Media, and XM Sirius Radio philosophy. And I'm standing by for reply! P.S. GreenMonster9669, "get you a cb, you will never regret it"...... Furthermore, encourage other new drivers (your peers) to do the same... Replies such as this "HalpinUout" PLEASE IGNORE THIS HYPO-NONSENSE: and yes we can really Help U Out, when you are positioned to be helped out. And aimhigh

Get the cb! Do not listen to naysayers such as HALPINUOUT. How is he to Help U Out when you cannot communicate. People like this (truckers) are miserable and want you to be miserable. For example, by just mentioning the word "cb" at any Iron Skillet will bring you all sorts of cb radio haters; continue to listen to them and you will notice that they are 1. Reclusive to a sin 2. Miserable and 3. Partly Anti-Social... Without the cb, the cb radio strike of 1974 would never have been possible. Unfortunately, many women trucker drivers have also been mislead about the cb. One would think that they would want all forms of communications at their disposal, however someone discouraged them early in their careers.

Use for shippers and receivers that can't, don't or won't rely on a cell phone..

    that's about it

Do you need a CB today to do the job? No. Is it still a useful tool to have in your truck? Yes. The air waves have changed a lot since I started driving. There are some places I go through that at times I turn it off for a few hours because of all the useless noise. All those kids who wasted hundreds of dollars on roger beeps, noise makers or whatever or those who just trash and hate talk constantly on air. At that point the CB is pretty much useless because the kids who are so lonely and starving for attention. Trucking used to be a way of life now it is more just a job. Although many of us old timers were considered loners as truck drivers we were never really alone. While driving we had a CB to talk to other truckers and to offer assistance if needed. When we parked for the night you had a real restaurant with a counter and/or a drivers only section where you could eat and talk to other drivers. The sleeper was just that a place for you to sleep it wasn't filled with TV's, computers, game consoles etc... it was where you went to sleep. Used to have some good conversations hanging out in the parking lot or siting at the counter drinking iced tea. Now everyone runs in grabs some fast food and takes it back to there truck to stare at a boob tube. No wonder the new kids feel like there in a big metal box. So anyway enough of my old timers rant. My suggestion to you is yes still get a CB. However, you don't have to get one right away wait until you can afford one and when you can you don't have to spend a ridiculous amount of money for one. There are decent ones out there that will do the job just fine for less.

What a crock. Get a CB. You will love it or hate it. Most urban areas you will hear nothing but trash talking. Some scales require or at least try to force you to have one. Some shippers as well. Good for traffic info such as detour around accidents. You will hear the same guy/gal asking every 5 miles if the scales are open. Don't be this moron. Know your load, truck, weight, and have your papers and permits in order. Enjoy the ride and also the CB when you get to use it to talk to other sane drivers. If you really enjoy the radio you may get into side band and even ham. Start off with a decent inexpensive radio like Cobra 25 and have it tuned with good antenna and coax by good shop. Don't worry about all the tones, echo, other BS. They all have their place but you can get them later. See $500 radios for sale for nothing at truck stops and on the air. Truckers are good at getting broke and will sell them for as low as $50. Was hauling sand couple of yrs ago. Guy on radio around Wichita Falls was begging to sell his Connex 4300. Almost new. Guy I was running with hollered at him and we met him at Flying J. Wound up giving the guy $60 and a cheap pocket knife for a really nice 10 meter. Ease in and hopefully you will not get discouraged by the plethora of morons.

Only thing that bothers me about the $500 radio being sold for less than $100 at a truck stop is wondering who's radio it really is. Last thing I want to do is enable a thief by purchasing a hot radio. I'd much rather pay a little more and know that it is a legitimate purchase.

You don't need a $500 radio, I didn't spend $500 for 3 Galaxies I have now. Only had them tuned and that's it, turned off the echo and just run them clean.

Me too. Both of mine came in box. Galaxy was about $239. And had to buy one quick one time. Got Cobra 25 at Loves and was really surprised at how well it talked. Got Clay's CB to tune it later and it is a very good backup for less then $100. The Connex my friend bought on road was installed in truck. The guy jerked it out. But like you say it could be hotter then a $2 pistol.
