Driver5, Thanks for the advice. They were down on my list as I had a suspicion that something was up by other comments I had seen.

Well, after a couple weeks in Williston, my next leg of this adventure takes me to Dickinson. I had applied with a bigger outfit a couple of months ago and they finally got back to me and offered a job. Will start out hauling water, and then can move in to a different area if I want to. For any new drivers, my experience in Williston taught me that it is better to start out with a bigger company and get trained properly while getting paid too. This advice has been given many times on this forum, but I got impatient and took the plunge with a small company, and I have to say it wasn't the best experience in the end. Sporadic work, poor equipment and a management style that wasn't real employee friendly. I made a few bucks on percentage but not nearly what I expected for the hours put in.
A quick note of the Williston experience. It was no way near as bad as I had anticipated it would be. I'd read a lot about how terrible this town was, but didn't really find that to be true. Sure, it's a small town bursting at the seams, but I had no problems shopping, eating, or even getting a hotel room. Everything is a bit more expensive but not much worse than a big City. At the beginning of this boom, Williston might have been a bad place to go and work , but I just didn't find that in my brief experience. That said, the traffic is bad, Similar to rush hours in a big city a lot of the time and there are semi trucks everywhere.
So, on to Dickinson for more fun and hopefully a lucrative adventure.

Sorry for the late response. Been pretty much working and sleeping. I like the Dickinson area a lot more than Williston. Job is going good, working a minimum of 12 hrs a day, on a 5-1 schedule. We run an electronic log so it's pretty strict on hrs. Overall the experience so far has been good.

Hey brmac, I am in same position you were in. Came to Williston 10 days ago to work for small company. Kinda already regretting decision. Did all my safety training with no pay but free housing (if you can call it a house) and was suppose to be in truck yesterday. So far no work so no pay. Company is leased on with MBI. Can't keep this up for very long. Any chance you could pm me company you are with now and if they are hiring? I figure if this goes on without work another few days I have to find something else.

brmac, thanks for the pm. Went thru my apps from a month and a half ago and realized I had applied with them. Talked to Cameron today and he said apps on line get lost so if I am not working tomorrow off to Dickinson for a face to face with him and reapply. No work again today so moving on looks inevitable.

I lived in Minot,Nd for four years, and worked at several rig cleaning outfits. The money is great, and the experiences unforgettable.Even though you guys getting there now don't have it so bad because housing is everywhere now compared to when I first arrived.Watford city was a little tiny town with few places to eat and very little housing and now there is plenty of places to dine and lots of housing.I advise all that are arriving that are not use to cold weather to acclimate yourselfs by using less layers at first before it starts getting in the 30's and below so that when the time comes you will not be so miserable out there.good luck out there.

I'm in Watford City between Williston and Dickinson and I have to agree with bmac, the living conditions are much better than advertised. I think the infrastructure is starting to catch up with the boom. Good places to eat around here, not sure on housing as I'm living in company housing. They just opened up the truck bypasses this past week which will shorten a lot of load times. There is actually a really good sushi joint here in Watford, decent pizza, a couple Mexican food places and some regular food restaurants. The weather is turning now, shouldn't be long before it's complete misery which is why now is the time to find a job. Workers are migrating south for the winter so most places are in the seasonal oh crap we need to hire anyone who applies mode. Where I'm at we've hired more people with no tanker experience much less crude experience than we've hired people who have crude hauling experience. I've been hauling crude for a little over 3 years, and I can count on 1 finger the number of drivers in my company that I know have that much experience. There might be a couple but I haven't met them yet, only met 20 or so. If you don't have experience and you want to get started in crude, now is the time to get on with an outfit and get that in your resume.

Well, just hitting my 4 month mark here in this Bakkeb adventure. Been some good been some bad. Biggest thing probably being that I'm not making the kind of money I had hoped. It's OK, and more than I would make back home, but it's not near the visions of 100k that I had heard about. Like a lot of new drivers, I'm going through that period of wondering if there is something better out there. I hear there is, but then again this company told us that we would make a lot more too. Anyway, I'm looking some, maybe put out a few apps and see what happens. Saw one job where you live in sleeper. 40 on, 10m off. Just curious if anyone out there has this kind of gig? Without ever experiencing that I'm wondering how I would adapt to sleeping in a truck all the time.
