I would think that move could eliminate jumping from truck to dock and back to truck. Could be a good thing.

My guess is,Conway uses a high percentage of part-time casual workers to fill these dock jobs. Many working there years with no job security.

Even the part time employes have the right to organize, that could get them some job security IF the union would fight for them.

Until this year, Con-way used the drivers as the primary means of loading freight. All of a sudden they introduced a significant amount of dock help and now drivers (line haul) arrive at the re-ship just to stand around because there are no motors to move freight (the part time d/w have them). It makes good financial sense from the following aspect(s):

1- The dock workers are hired through a "temp" service. No benefits for Con-way, taxes, workers comp, etc.

2- Cheap wages. Average dock hand is $12-14/ hr where the drivers are $21-25.

    DOWNSIDES:

This year Co-way has announced that through the 3rd qtr ytd our damages are pacing what they were last year total, and we have a quarter to go. The temporary hands have little or no experience in the freight business, and when they find out what the wage difference is they typically get a bad attitude. The weather is a factor, as we all know how cold and hot the dock can be. The turnover rate is pretty high, there are few if ANY tenured dock hands.

Los Angeles voted to unionize, Santa Fe Springs and San Fernando Valley voted against.

Hopefully we can shore that up by isolating the dockworkers to their own deal and not mix the issues together. Miami is ringing some heads right now :biggrin_25514:

As an O/O, you should love unions, Bright One. Bloated payrolls and all, right? Inefficient procedures? Gives you a competitive advantage. Better take it and count your blessings. The non-union TL outfits get free labor from their thousands of drivers and you're underbid right there. They can churn higher paid drivers out and newer, cheaper drivers in. So everybody doesn't lose. You win. Stop griping. Companies get what they deserve. Con-way deserves a little driver democracy and bargaining with their drivers as a unit, not one-by-one. A contract with drivers that drivers can enforce.

Why ? Mine grew at almost 15% annually during the recession. In process of rolling it over. Got last statement about 2 months ago, was asking how hard a hit over the last few weeks. Had grew 7.6% since that statement . Market had been hammered. Just have to be smart with your choices . Know a bunch of people took hits. Know a few that cashed out after, turning a lose on paper real.
