well, do yourself at least one favor - find a company that allows passengers and do a ride along for a few days or a week.

Since you have conceeded that it is not the money you are in it for I'll admit I wouldn't trade my driving experiences for having not had to suffer through the frustration just to see the scenery.

Driving a truck dispatched by someone who could care less about you will challenge your safe driving to the limit. The first time you get an 11 hour drive and 11 hours to do it in and you are already at 7 hours of driving and almost out of fuel you will say "WHAT???" Don't think it will happen? Then you haven't read nearly enough of this forum yet.

I understand boredom. I'm over educated, underemployed, a kept man, and I'd rather just get in a rig and go drive everyday that I wake up in the same house as my wife (meaning I've gotten to spend time with her rather than I can't stand being with her). But after a few weeks of driving with toothpicks holding my eyes open and getting out of shippers docks at 1 AM when there is no where to park anywhere, I always start wondering if there aren't better ways to earn $10.99/hr (or less).

It's a free country. Go see it. Just make sure you have a way to pay your bills that doesn't require you to get any miles.

There is nothing wrong with following up on a dream. How many people can actually say they are doing what their childhood dream was?

not trying to talk you out of it, I just want you to have some idea of what you're getting into. don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed a lot of what I've done. but it took me a while to get to that point. then my wages (that is to say, "miles") started going down and I had to quit. this job requires a lot of long days and aggravations that a lot of people don't realize. I AM glad to hear you're not getting into it for the money however. I was making $.39 per mile 2 years ago, now I can't find a company that pays more than $.35 per mile for 2 years experience.

OTR truck driving can be a rewarding endevour, but you gotta WANT IT. If you dont WANT to do it and I mean HELL BENT wanna do it, then stay on the sidelines.

On the other hand, you could try to get elected to the US senate or congress with equal effort as truck driving requires. If successful, you'll be viewed by the public as far worse than a truck driver, but you'll make up for it by scoring the enormous "perks" of one who lives the elected high life, while fleecing the very Americans who elect you.

    Good luckola..................
