So you are saying this is a programming set up. Cruise one, pedal another? Are you saying this can be programmed out to be up to 500 or anything
in between the 430 and 500 on either cruise or pedal? So this motor is a differently programmed 12.7 series 60?

It's a multi trq tune. It will be 500hp with cruise or top 2 or 3 gears and 430 elsewhere. I would change it and put a different turbo on it. You would get better mpg changing it but it works okay for what it is.

I would stop here and go over to this link to ask questions, a lot of people there are knowledgeable in the RV/Truck thing. Many have done something like you want to do.

As for looking at them, don't worry about the gearing, the mileage, hp etc. worry about getting the thing on a dyno to find out what the percentage of rated HP is, the blowby and having a good mechanic looking at it.

By the way, a lot of older (2000 to 2006 trucks) are out there and really reasonable.

Yes I have seen some decent prices. I posted in this area to find out more about the best motors, trans, etc. If there is another area, or different forum, I'd be glad to go there go find out more. Did you mean to put a link in your post? Thanks for your input.

I am looking at doing similar to 67JeepTruck. I have a 44' fifth wheel toy hauler at 21K lbs. I am currently pulling it with a F350 dually diesel but am clearly on the edge of it's capacity. Would love to get a Pete 379 flattop. only mods would be for the RV Trailer lights and air ride fifth wheel plate and air ride pin box on the RV. I have driven many tractors while in the military (Heavy Haul) but never had a CDL. I can easily do the air ride and lights mod. I have the same concerns. I need a good recommendation on a solid reputable class 8. From what I have researched in the past several months, I am down to Peterbuilt 379 with Detroit Diesel 12.7 liter and 3.55 or lower rears. Now the million dollar question,,, is it difficult to find a shop to inspect the engine / trans? what would be the estimated cost? BTW, this thread is packed with great advice from everyone's experience and I have taken notes and learned a lot. Will I have to get a CDL to operate this truck once it is modified? Thanks!!!
