David, Diane's "helper" sorta started off rough very "to the book" kinda guy, ex-military. I guess bobby hired him as a new dispatcher, for the time that he's been here, a few months now he's really a good guy! He's been sorta in charge of collecting detention, and he does a GREAT job at getting me everything possible. Also, if I'm sitting and haven't gotten a door, or just been waiting awhile, he will call and im not sure what he does, but it seems that they always get a move on after he calls.
He is going to make a really good dispatcher, also the guy drove for 6 years, with various companies but his last one I think was prime. In my opinion it makes all the difference having dispatchers and support that actually drove a truck. I remember one time when I was at Roehl that It took me 10 min to explain an issue with the landing gear on the trailer before he even had a clue on what I was talking about. At the time I was frustrated, but now I look back and laugh because that guy my "fm" had no idea what the hell he was doing

In good ol Louisiana picking up a load going to Washington. Delivers on Sunday, since I had a trip last week go through and finished on Monday that was 1300 miles I should have somewhere between 4500-4700 for next week! A new record, kinda nervous about heading that way hopefully mother nature will play nice.

Anyone look to drive for UZ Trans as an o/o needs to ask the right questions. I talked to the safety staff /recruiting dept and two different owner ops. They may be the perfect company for company drivers but quite different for o/o.
First issue that caught my attention, they use Rts carrier fleet one fuel cards. Both o/o's I talked to said they were getting cash price for fuel every time. Rts says anyone in their network gets cost plus or retail minus pricing. Sometimes cash price. Both O/O's said they use pilot and flying j. Those are stops in the Rts network. It seems UZ isn't passing on the savings. You are paying them everytime you use their card and fuel up. That to me isn't right.
The other issue I have is the way the loads are assigned to the o/o. The way I understand it, (t_trucker might be able to explain it better than the other two.) a dispatcher finds a load on the board, calls the broker and asks the pay. The dispatcher calls the o/o and offers the load. The o/o accepts the load. Dispatcher calls broker and books the load if it's still available. Now i know for a fact that not all brokers put out their best price up front. Under the UZ system, i don't understand how the negotiation step works. The dispatcher can't negotiate before the o/o says he will accept. The o/o accepts the load for a set price, at that point the dispatcher can ask for whatever he wants. Neither o/o I spoke with was ever told the load paid more than they were first quoted. Both have never seen a copy of the rate con. One didn't even know what a rate con was.
Looking at load boards is totally out of the question. They say it is best for you to get your rest while the dispatcher looks for loads and then calls you. Lol.

Do your homework and ask questions before commiting to a lease.

From everything he has told me, yes it seems 3500 miles a week is pretty attainable at UZ. They seem to keep him busy. Long runs definitely help.

I will break down everything to my knowledge, when I leased I made good money, the highest I made in 1 week bring home was 2700. And no, I am not lieing, the money is there, you have to be smart where you run and what you take, but the money is good. Doing a straight lease is a bit much on weekly expenses and that's why I went back to company, but there is money to be made.

far as getting loads, yes your right... No load board, however not many companies offer that kinda deal when leasing. How it worked for me was my dispatcher would call, give me load details, pay, miles, weight, PU city and destination, if the price isn't good or doesn't meet what you need you can absolutely tell the dispatch what you need, 9 times outta 10 they would always take my request. Never once did I have a load pay me under 1.40. That was my lowest and I saw it once, I had many trips 2.30-3.00+ depending where I was. Also, if the load they called you with wasn't something you wanted, just say so and you can go wherever you'd like.

Fuel card is fleet one (rts) and you can fuel wherever you'd like. I do hear what your saying but my bottom line while leasing was I made some good money. I still talk to a guy hear that is leasing and he does very well. IMO it's hard to find a good lease deal, but UZ is not NEARLY as bad as 90% of all these other LP out here.

Challenger, 3500 miles per week is very easy to see. Manage your ELogs right and you'll run non stop.

Be intersting to see how that equates to the dry side. I know long loads make 3500 miles a week pretty easy, short loads are a lot more time consuming and tedious. I hope they have plenty of 1000 mile runs on the dry side too.

Im sure they do man, last time I was by the office I was talking to the newest guy hired he used to drive for prime and he was on the dry side and he was very happy with his miles. I believe he's leasing now but he stayed pulling a dry Van
