I had a truck with built in GPS but never turned it on....was actually glad that they gave the truck to a newb who needed it. I've used the Delorme map program on my laptop and Mapquest when I have internet access and need a birdseye view. Don't trust every route a car GPS gives you but use it as a tool and think for yourself when a route looks funny. Never be afraid to call for detailed directions if it looks like you're going into a big mess and ask about no-truck roads, low bridges, tight turns, etc. There are apps for your smartphone that will tell you a bunch of valuable things and it might be worth the investment to get an unlimited plan to keep you out of a lot of trouble. The most important thing about driving is knowing where not to go.
