Multiple sales guys claiming their 12-14 CARB engines won't need rebuild until >600k

Scoping out trucks, feeling out salesmen; they're doing their salesmen thing "yeah we've got a great selection of used trucks." Oh I'm sure you do, desk jockey. "Yeah most of em are between 200-600,000 ranging from 40-80k" yeah but I was wanting to swing closer to 100k and not have to worry about inframe or any moderate/severe issues for atleast a few years...or just plainly go brand new "No, no, nope! 500k inframe is old school thought, these newer engines don't require a rebuild until well over 500k, made with tighter tolerances."

I've had probably 7 conversations along those lines, over the past few days about these newer CARB emissions standard engines. All of them lead up to the salesmen claiming an engine from either ; Detroit, Mack, Cummins or Paccar that's in the 12-14' range will not require any form of rebuild until over 600,000 maybe more.

well that's a grand thing. Probably not true but a grand ideal nonetheless, I mean how else would you try to sell a steaming hunk of crap?

I wanted to get some of your opinions, but the funny thing is...if you have an engine...made between 12-14', it's pretty unlikely to be at such a mileage range, yet. So this is a claim you can't backup unless we are talking about a team operated truck.

But wouldn't it be nice to have some conversation regarding this topic?

    btw, in this order;

-Detroit and Mack are neck and neck for my business. Have had both, liked both, in high mileage range on both and they ran great, easy to source parts on and easier than others for myself to diagnose and work on.

-Cummins is distant second, don't particularly enjoy eating an EGR cooler but there you have it. Pricey to fix too.

-Paccar, have had the MX, was a nightmare but I'm hearing a lot good about it, willing to give it a second chance and thinking I might've got a rough stick end.

-CAT & Maxxforce completely off the table.

    Thoughts?

Edit, worth mentioning none of these sales guys would put down even close to a guesstimate on what mileage, by they were him-hawwing around 750-800k+ Especially the DD guy.

Well, only input I can give you is, we run lite and run small 2010 DD13's, and I really wasn't hot on these engines when we first got them (preferred Cummins) however we are fast approaching 700,000 on some and have had NO "hard" engine issues, and they burn no more oil now than they did at 200,000 which was very little.

Now, have replaced some injectors, and injector wiring harnesses, AND have cleaned the DPF's every 300,000 and have started to replace some DOC's at 1800.00 a pop, but other than services and some sensor's, that has been it.

Was sure I was going to be "out" of them at 600,000, but I may hang on to them till 850,000 that will get me into 2017's

WOW! you can go a whole 600k before it needs a rebuild? What happened to 1 million? I have to agree with you on the Detroit being the leader of the pack. I only have experience in one Mack and that had an ultrashift and jakes that could not slow the truck down if it was chained to a tree so that puts the mack off for me.

I have heard from some mechanics that the egr cooler was fixed in '13 and above but I have no proof of that.

Personally, for me, the only choice is Detroit with an older CAT being 2nd. Detroit being by far the least expensive to purchase parts for.

Yeah I've got a DD 15 right now and it gives me zero problems. Check the oil level every chance I get, minimally every 2 days pop the hood.
My only complaint is that the EGR intake return has some soot blowing out of the side of the that high temp rubber gasket about 10 inches down the return unit.

washes off and it's as tight as can be on there so I'm hardly worried.

One other thing there CW, I was worried about having to eat turbo's after the Accert thing and some other VG horror stories, but I have yet to replace one, and have talked with a FHTL dealer we use quite a bit that has a large fleet of Conway's running our same platform (short nose Cascadia w/DD13's)

Said they have yet to replace a turbo, that made me feel good!.

Ask your super salesman if he'll put that rebuild guess in writing......we all know he won't .

    (Detroit is probably the best)

    Best of luck

Thinking fitz Coronado 12.7, seeing a lot of em coming around with 1-200k miles for under 90k.
Anyone know why they're getting kicked back out? Hearing mixed reviews on these recons coming out the past few years. You know it's getting interesting when Rutherford is mulling over using recon e-7's

But also to see a truck msrp at 145k brand new, pickup 12-24 months or 1-200k miles then immediatly drop 50k in value is somewhat...interesting? But on the other hand, it is an FLD product...

Most newer trucks with ego will go over 600 thousand miles over the road but yeah forget about them being as good as the pre ego 1-1.3 million miles that would normally go before needing overhauled and on the subject check the hours of a used truck if the hours are high you will not get as many miles they should average 45 mile per hour so a truck with 10 thousand hours should have 450 thousand hours up here in north Dakota I am overhauling engines with 200 thousand miles but they have 15-25 thousand hours they just idle and run pto more hours then they go down the road

Here's my thoughts; unless you have to run California I see it as foolish to buy anything built after 2003. Stop patronizing these engine manufacturers and buying this government mandated crap they put out. You'd be way better off buying a glider if you're going to spend that kind of money or a used pre-emissions truck and putting money into it. I drive a fleet truck, new Cascadia with a DD13 and everyday I just smile because I'm so glad I don't own it. A million miles on these newer engines? These things were broken when they left the factory. Leave it to the government to screw-up anything it touches. Thanks EPA! You have put a lot of guys out of business and mandate an unsafe product! Put the government in charge of the Sahara and they'd be outta sand in a week!

I really see no problems with a CARB engine, yes there is the additional mechanical issues but outside of that they have hugely reduced pollution in our particular industry. I'm no Eco-nut but we as a species need to stop poisoning our planet.

Another discussing for another time, leave the government out of this thread- thanks much guys.
