Hi Lunchman, that's cool, enjoy the little one. Before you know it, they're out the door (like my kids) Not sure where you are, but I hauled intermodal for almost 5 years out of Chicago, and honestly, that was the worst part of the job, not the intermodal so much. I did it with the old Pete below, and it clearly wasn't the truck for the job, so it was either get a different truck, or sell it and get a company job, which I did.

I don't mind it all too much, just very time consuming for the pay. Am lucky enough that the company I work for doesn't "stage" our trailers, so I get to go pick the chassis's and such (blessing and a curse).. I also run the longer routes and don't hang out in the city all that much. Usually average 400-500 miles a day on just one trip. Looking at that Pete in your sig, I've no idea how you used that for Intermodal. =)
Hi Lunchman, welcome to the wonderful world of containers, it ain't reefer hauling. 1st, I don't know how you can get by with a fixed 5th wheel, I thought only tankers can get by with those, and 2nd, I got those angled ones and they worked fine, Also, I never bought a mud flap in my life, as there was a wide assortment to choose from at the rail yards behind the trailers.
Well, I thought I'd have to switch out to a sliding 5th as well.. But now that I've got 6+ months into it.. I've not really had a need for it. My truck is light on the front, 10,800 pounds bobtail, 10,800 pounds with 45k in the box. Nuts. What I found though is am never close on weights, its either legal, or its so far over a sliding 5th wouldn't change anything. My truck is also an Ex-CFI truck, so it has all the aluminum cross members and underside of the cab, etc. Its light weight for a T6, I also have the CM570 Cummins motor in it (no EGR).. Some of the guys I run with have the C15 Cat and the steel cross members, etc. and they have a much harder time with weights then I do, specifically on the front end. They also seem to eat the steer tires, something I've not had a problem with yet. Put new Steer's on when I started this and the wear is just fine (crosses fingers, knocks on wood, watches for black cats, etc.. lol).

Hi Lunchman, actually, the equipment has gotten better, my biggest gripe was the tube tires. The Pete I only did that for 6 months, but had an '82 Western Star that I hauled RR cans for almost 4 years before the Pete. I bought the Pete on a whim,as I love old trucks. It wasn't so bad at the rail yards, but delivering to places was a pain, with no power steering. I regret to this day selling the old Pete, and that was 20 years ago.:biggrin_2553:

I've always been anal about fuel, took a huge hit with the intermodal. I always say, if you don't like my speed, there's a jar on the side of the truck, it only takes bills, put some in if you want more speed.. lol. Am the guy everyone ####### about going 60mph down the freeway!

It had a Big Cam Cummins, and every BC I drove seemed to get high 5's or even 6. But that was when fuel was $1.20, so it wasn't an issue. Actually, for driving down the road, I liked the manual steering, but many times, when I was assigned a dock, I'd have to request 2 empty docks, as I just couldn't turn the wheel fast enough. You had to be moving to turn the steering wheel.
