I was hauling a heavy container and all of a sudden heard a pop and the truck stopped. I got out to see that the drive shaft broke. What would cause the drive shaft to break?

They do break once in a while. One thing that can cause damage is being stuck in snow or sand and getting the rear end to start jumping up and down.

All that power under the hood ???
RedForeman and Cetane+ Thank this. -
Was the actual drive shaft broken? Or was it a u-joint?

I have seen the weld between the tube and flange not have good penetration on one side and cause it. Course everything else mentioned too

U did say u were hauling a HEAVY CONTAINER right? -
Several causes.
1. Dumping the clutch on takeoff
2. Too high a gear on takeoff, which will require you to rev the motor and dump the clutch to avoid stalling the engine.
3. U joint or yoke failure caused by a lack of lube/grease. In other words, your PM services need to be more frequent.
4. Normal wear.
