    This is the post referenced in Blair's thread that estimates the total operating cost of an old truck vs new:
    Works out to an extra ~$860/month for a new truck

    Validating the premise that there is more - way more - than just the first line (purchase price), but so many drivers stop considering everything else after that.

    Thanks for posting that comparison. The only other thing that should have been included would have been an inframe on the used truck. When buying a used truck and running it for 5 years the probability of an engine rebuilt should be considered.

    I just got done running a truck for four month and the owner actually shut it down due to high repair costs. He bought a 2000 379 Peterbilt for $35,500 that had less than 50,000 miles on an inframe, but he probably spent another $15,000 or more on it on it. It still has a clutch that is just about done, a bad steering gear, both pumpkins are leaking, the rear axle housing is cracked and the list goes on and on.

    Also, when thinking of the higher repair costs how many days did the truck loose in running? The $900.00 per month can easily be swayed by loosing a load every month to being in the shop. I can compare running with Fairchild when I had my old 379 after every trip it had to have things fixed and it spent quite a bit of time in the shop. The brand new 389 ran like a champ. I put about 90,000mls on that truck before I left and I had zero problems.

    I can't believe that I am making an argument for a new truck, but they do sound better and better to me these days. The only other thing is that it can be a crab shoot if you get a good one or a shop queen.

    Technology has improved and advanced, but there is much more automation in the design and manufacturing processes. This introduces the opportunity for many more original defects both in the design and build. Eventually, these discrepancies will be discovered, most likely during the 'shakedown cruise,' as we called it in the Navy, and someone will have to pay.

    For me, I prefer some 'age' on my vehicles, just like a woman. 😁

    because I screwed up and asked a question about becoming an OO as far as costs and if there were companies for hire that did all the legal and paper work to start up , in a general reply to the part of thread about how much one must pay and do to buy the truck and get going . I mentioned I was going to haul grain .

    double yellow ;
    Why is there no FET on a used truck ? Isn't this the excise tax for tires ?

    FET on a truck is charged on the purchase of new trucks only. Doesn't happen on used trucks.

    As Old man stated on the Blair and Gretchen thread buying a new truck is not for evryone

    but if you were running team and doing 200 thousand a year and trading every 3 years I bet the numbers would show that you would be ahead with buying new constantly because of the no lost work from breakdowns.

    if I were to do the hard running or team thing I would buy a Glider.Lower initial cost and i think the high resale every 3 years with 600 thousand on it would surprise you

    You can use OOIDA, Western Trucking Alliance, NASTC or lots of private companies to help get your authority. Your basic fee is $300.00 for your Authority (MCS_150) that will get you a MC and USDOT number. United carrier registration UCR is about $80.00 for one truck. Heavy vehicle use tax is $550.00 per year, but will be prorated if you would get it right now plan on $220.00ish. You will need a process agent BOC-3. Charges vary wildly, but if you a member of OOIDA it is a free service they will provide for their members. Now here comes the big one insurance. You should check that first before you do anything else. New start up will be between $1000.00-$1500.00 per month as a rough idea. Your experience, driving record and credit score will greatly affect quotes. The next big one is plates for your truck. The IRP changed at the beginning of this year and you will buy 58 Sates and Provinces and you will look at about $2000.00 for your baseplate or more depending on the weight you will be licensed at. That is kind of the basics in a nutshell, but remember anytime you will use somebody to do those things for you will pay for their services.
