Good points danny -- and I agree that a glider should offer the lowest overall cost per mile of any option.
California, at least, does charge sales tax (collected when you first register the truck). If you live in a no-tax state things could pencil out very differently (I believe Rollin Coal said he didn't have to pay sales tax on his trailer in TN).
An aside: I do find it sad how many of my decisions need to factor in tax implications. These don't even have to be trucking decisions: right now I have a stock I'd love to sell, but if I do so now I'll pay a higher tax rate than if I wait another few months. While I don't quite think the "fair tax" is truly fair, something like it should be done because a lot of time & brainpower is wasted on non productive uses...
Back on topic, the maintenance #s came from select trucks and I don't think they are terrible estimates. While you may not actually pay for much more than PMs your first year in a new truck, you have probably shaved off $2,000 worth of rubber that will come due later... Likewise you can't expect to pay exactly $10,000 each year in maintenance with an old tractor. 1 year might be $25,000, the next could be $4,000 then $8,000, then $6k...
As far as the used truck price goes, you can find decent trucks under $15,000 if you really look hard. Mine was $14,500; Blair's was $12,500. But both of us took months to sift through all the junkers (that time was also something I failed to factor into my comparison).

again just my limited experience on 2 new trucks
warranty work on a KW was like pulling chicken teeth
while Freightliner seems to bend over backwards
to see if the extended warranty appliescsmith1281, Grijon, blairandgretchen and 1 other person Thank this. -
Sounds good DY, I am looking forward to digging through these threads and finding out what you guys got, what you're pulling, etc...

I believe the laws were changed last year that FET is now applied to gliders unfortunately

Not trivial, and will take them all some time to get where wore out is at, while those of us with less courage and/or commitment watch on...
More than a little envious, apprehensive and hopeful for them all!!Last edited: Feb 15, 2015

There is a third rail between Blair (Landstar) and DY (own authority). If you can find the right outfit, run under their authority without the attendant 'fleece.' Yes, these deals are out there. A young guy I met got pushed into buying the truck he was driving for the owner who had it running for Venture Logistics (Indianapolis). Driver resisted and resisted.
Owner pushed and pushed. Finally asked, "What's the worst that can happen?" Driver said worst was the owner takes the truck back. Owner laughed and said, "So what?" That was 3 years ago, young driver paid off the truck, now owns it, still runs turns to St. Louis for Venture Logistics.
Owner cut him some slack when he hit thin patches in first 6 months...
Didn't require rocket science or Bill Gates' business acumen. Owner had a good, solid truck (Volvo), knew young driver would continue to take good care of it and the run for Venture Logistics. Young driver began with ZERO 'business sense.' Owner just wanted out from under all the details of ownership.
Young driver used the owner's knowledge a lot until one day owner said, "Well, what do you think you should do? It's YOUR truck after all!!"
Meant, young driver had 'graduated' from driver to an owner himself... and capable of making his own decisions.Last edited: Feb 15, 2015
