If your talking about an SDP Cat, no question, take the Detroit. If we're talking a 2007 NXS Acert, vs. a 14L EGR S60 (both in stock form), it depends on your mechanical skill level. Detroit has cheaper parts, but the EGR system is more complicated to properly diagnose, which means more money to dealers unless you have the DDEC software and are familiar with it.

Cat parts are more money, but you can learn to fix many common issues on the pre-regen Acerts with a few tools and flash codes. Intake actuators, injector harness', actuation pressure sensors, coolant diverter valve problems (mostly wiring) are a few of the more common problems that have a relatively short learning curve to repair yourself.

My uncle's 6nz went through million miles without breakdown yet and it is still alive. He already had tranny and rear axles replaced.

I got a 6nz maybe 4 months ago. I don't have any experience with any other trucks so it's hard to say why I think the cat is any better. That being said, it's single turbo, pre acert no egr, it has a marine cam and a tune in it and it seems to be a monster. Paperwork says 990 HP and "enough" torque lol. 1.2 million miles before in-frame and about 125k on rebuild. Paired with new heavy spec drive line and rear ends to make sure nothing snaps and we've been as happy as can be.

I noticed this was an older thread that was revived, so I'll give my two cents. We actually have both in our small fleet and they are great engines. I will say that we favor our pre egr 14L more though. It gets way better fuel mileage than the c15 6nz that we own. They are both tuned with performance manifolds, custom turbos, k&n filters, free flowing exhaust, etc. When hooked to skateboards with the same load, the 14L will walk the Cat with no problem. The 14L is a strong highway engine and often left out of the Cat versus Detroit debates. Now don't get me wrong...the Cat is no slouch. I just get tired of the guys with triple turbo or mega money Cats talking about how they outperform the Detroit engines. Anyone can drop a lot of money in either motor to make them throw down some power. Comparing on road trucks with minor modifications that most people drive every day is completely different. We also have a 12.7L and it's by far the best on fuel out of any engine. It has the same mods and will run with the c15 all day. I'm a 3rd generation driver/mechanic and we've had everything under the sun. People have their own opinions, so this is just from our experience. I say pick your flavor and make the best out of it.

Agreed. Having driven both a bridge motor C15 that was partially 6NZ'd and an un-EGR'd 14L for several years - both engines were hosses - tuned and dialed in with non-waste gated turbos, aftermarket free flowing exhaust manifolds, unbafffled free flowing mufflers. Both were a mild 550 hp maybe a little more. Reliable, usable power. The 14L would run circles around the C15 on fuel mileage. And would pull grades just as well too, maybe better, I dunno never had them side by side. That made the 14L the winner in my book. The only minor bad thing was the Detroit dripped oil on the ground and that was aggravating while the CAT never dripped a drop anywhere. As far as parts being expensive for the CAT I never had to buy many parts, it was dependable. Both engines were.
