I am beyond frustrated with the tnd 720 and rand McNally. Several days have been wasted and no end in sight due to the horrible software and customer support for this product.

My device was working fine until I attempted to update it after several days of prompts from the dock software on my PC. I updated it many times before with no issues and I am a CS graduate so I have some understanding of how software should work. After the most recent update that requires an SD card, of which I already had installed, my device immediately displayed the error message "System File Missing, contact customer support". I thought that was a strange message since contacting support at the first sign of a software issue is telling of the quality to be expected. After that I attempted all suggested steps from rand McNally support page. Diagnostic and repair failed to find any issue with the device. uninstalling the dock and attempting the fix again failed. I contacted support yesterday and was greeted with a uninformed representative who simply remote connected to my device and performed the same operations I had already attempted with the exception of deleting my sd card. He assured me this would fix the problem and to attempt the update again. So I used the remaining data on my metered highspeed Verizon account to download the update for the 4th time only to have the same system file missing error, just as expected based on what I had already experienced and despite the reps claims to the contrary.

A previous rep also stated that the other option was to send it in for repairs. Repairs? My device is not physically broken. This is a software issue that was caused by your software. Why can't this be fixed from my computer? This is the equivalent of sending your laptop back to the manufacturer every time an update is released for the OS. That option is totally ridiculous. If this the nature of this product then I feel that I have totally wasted money. To make things worse, at the same time I was making the update I purchased the traffic everywhere subscription for a year. I will be calling them back today to inform them that the update failed again and my de vice is still stuck on this screen. If they tell me I need to send it to them and be without it for days or weeks then I will never buy another product from them. I'm a truck driver who needs a navigation system that can be managed by the user on the software end. I could understand if the device had some physical malfunction, but I don't see how an update could cause such a failure of internal components.

If someone here has any idea how I can fix this issue now without dealing with an RMA I would greatly appreciate it.

I can see how, if taken out of context, one could arrive at such a conclusion. But, yes, I am a truck driver. Which is why I need a truck GPS (one of many tools in my redundancy repertoire) that doesn't need to be sent back to the OEM for software issues.

That was an attempt at sarcastic humor.

GPS is a tool that increases efficiency, when it works properly. I understand your frustration. I was trying to throw a joke in before those 30-40 years expeinced drivers told you to throw it out the window and get an atlas.

System file missing means that when it boots up it looks for certain files in the Navi/Bin and the Navimaps folders. If those files are missing or corrupt then you will get this message.

I just got the TND Tablet and it will not save the voice I select. It always defaults back to Samantha. Anyone else have this issue?

Important note - the 720 is FAT 32 formatted, if you put a SD Card in make sure the SD Card is also formatted FAT 32.. IF the SD Card is formatted NTFS the 720 will not read the SD Card and you will get a "system files missing" error.

Under computer/right click/manage/storage/disk management to view the formatted type or drive letter/format/file system to see formatted type. If NTFS, it needs to be formatted (quick) to FAT 32 be sure to copy the NaviMaps to the desktop first, then back after formatting.

Somehow the RR crossing POI's were deleted on my 730. Any idea on how to get them back?

For what its worth here's a truck stop that rand hasn't found yet

High Desert Truck Stop 15655 HWY 395 Victorville Ca 92394 ( next to Adelanto, ca / adelanto dr.)

Its approx 33 miles south on 395 of the pilot in Boron Ca - 395 and 58 - and approx 12 miles north on 395 of the pilot inHHesperia Ca off the 15 - I was told scales are coming soon as well as some other improvements.. I like because parking is always available or at least its currently that way.. They do have showers laundry services and a Mexican restaurant but the restaurant closes at 9pm. Don't know the phone number..

Go to the POI-Factory and download them.. Make sure to get the Rand version. Save to your desktop and then with the 730 connected to the computer use the Dock to import them to the 730. Then disconnect the 730 and connect to a power source. Upon boot up you will see the screen to import the POI's.

BTW, I will post some links in the next day or two that were created for USA/Canada CV crossings, Tanker washout, Brake check area's and Runaway ramps.
