It's not a mystery. The governments have made it that way. How do you think it can be any other way after the governments have manipulated the "free" market with all the mechanisms that I have listed earlier. And there will be more to come. Watch for cabotage rules to change.
To paraphrase the old warden, "That's the way they want it, so they get it".
No wonder truckers are paid so little!

If a mega can't afford wages it can only be for a few reasons.
1. Can afford to do it but too cheap.
2. Doesn't charge enough for their services.
The way I see these megas operate is like so.
#1 bring in a bunch of unsuspecting suckers.
#2 starve them out
#3 Collect training money from government & drivers
#4 Rinse & Repeat
Those megas are running a scam, let's be honest. -
Swift and megas wouldnt exsist. There would be alot more companys with alot fewer trucks. Thats how. If a company gets so big that standered of living increces would close the doors then close the #### doors. Others will pick up the work. Or they could downsize to manage costs. Or charge more to run freight. Lots of solutions to that problem. But under paying becuse there TOO big to pay? Sorry. But as i said there mcdonalds, never ment to be a permenant job....UKJ Thanks this. -

Cabotage: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabotage
It wouldn't take much of an increase in the CPI (Consumer Price Index) or the cost of tubes of toothpaste or trash bags to raise the wages of truck drivers. Because there are so many of us, I think over 3 million truck drivers, we become a commodity, unlike the far fewer number of plumbers or electricians, for example.
When you're a commodity, who you are individually doesn't much matter. The megas that hire newbies are typically self-insured up to a point. And they suck up the newbies. Most companies can't self-insure and their insurance dictates the experience level they must hire, with two-year ticket being about the minimum. -
