Most profitable tanker companies 4 owner operators

Take care Scott. Hope you ended up in a place that works out better for you. As far as me being content over here. I'm looking for more than a $204,000 gross. I'm not in a huge rush to leave, I have some things I have to take care of first, but leaving is on the list of things to do as I get some other things out of the way.

 

I moved to Altom. Paper logs. Better rates. Same games. I just did 4 weeks running between El Dorado, AR and Houston. I was doin 70% of $1350, or $945/day plus fsc. I did around 1450 +/- miles per fill up. (2days). 14,000 miles in those 4 weeks. 5 loads a week. Made some really good money. By way of contrast, the week before I did these runs, I only got 1 load in for the week. Brought home $431. The week before that, I had 3 kids (7, 9 &11) with the flu. I stayed home to help the momma, so that week saw a load to southern Indiana and one coming right back up. Did about $2200 for that week.

Today, I have to deadhead from here up to north of Portage, WI, load and head to Arizona. $5300 linehaul. Not too shabby.

The 9 and 11yr old have ceribl palsy. Spent a lot of money on treatment, therapy, surgeries, you get my point. Didn't have insurance for a few years wasn't helping either. So yah, $197K really goes fast. Not to mention the 3 older kids. And the granddaughter. Like I said earlier, my situation is different from most. Home schooling, special diet for them. Tell ya what. I wouldn't wish this on anybody and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I'm curious Mike, have you done a cost benefit analysis on owning your own tank? 10% revenue before taxes seems low considering all the costs associated with the tank. I've seen failed VIK's push 10 grand in the shop. ( pitting, welding etc. )

yes I have talked to Danny. Really interested in pulling for Danny since i live 45 minutes away from the nitro terminal. I have a job now working for a coal company here in wv and have a truck pulling freight. I want away from the coal industry but I have a wife with 2 kids and don't wanna be gone all week so when Danny mentioned I would "most of the time" be home every other day unless I wanted to take a texas load, I was interested. Just wanted to find out if what he was telling me was true before I jumped into it

 

Yes, what he is telling you is pretty much the way they run out of Nitro. When things get slow, if you want to stay busy you might have to pack your bag for the week, but most of their stuff is 250-500 miles out and back. Miller will set up your truck, put a pump on it, and set it up for intransit heat. Wont cost you anything, but they will take it back off if you leave (of course). Depending on how hard you want to stay busy, you would have to confirm with Danny, but I think most of the guys doing short haul dedicated out of Nitro are probably somewhere in the mid $170,000 for the year turning 80-100,000 miles. Anything over 2200 miles a week is pretty strong running short haul.

I'm an o/o and looking to get some tanker experience. I'll be moving to Columbia, SC this summer and my truck will be paid off. I was looking at either Miller or Trimac. Does anyone have any info or advice?

 

Chalupa, 10% is about the norm for your own trailer. Altom only gives 2%. Doesn't even cover the payments. Depending on the age you get, (FWIW, I have priced out a brand new light weight Brenner 7000 gal insulated stainless steel at just under $80,000) I wouldn't really be worried about the yearly or code testing

Lunch money, both Irishman and myself have spelled out a lot about Miller already. I have no opinion on Trimac, other than I personally wouldn't go there. TWT, or Tidewater, treats the O/O's I've talked to fairly. Nothing to report on revenue, sorry. I wouldn't rule out smaller companies, though.

Thanks for the response. I'm just looking to get at least a year of hauling chemical tanks under my belt so that other opportunities will open up. I might take my chances with Miller since they have an o/o terminal in Orangeburg, SC. Do o/o's do well at that terminal if you know?

 

As they were at a different terminal, I really don't know how they did overall. Big Don is (or was) the terminal manager there. Treated me fair the couple of times I was there. One of the lady o/o's I talked to from there said Big D was a snake in the grass. Another guy quit so he could be closer to home. Hauling gas now. That's all I know.

Something to keep in the back of your mind is that miller will up fit your truck with a pump, tap into your air tanks (to air off a load) , add intransit heat hookups, and disable the trolley bar (hand trailer brake).
