Maybe the truck would gain 1 mpg. Now those posting here would be unwilling to spend the money to gain 1 mpg, but a green, Coolaid drinker who was willing to follow his every word might. I have never driven a truck with a double frame. I assume that it would be used for heavy haul, so not planning to haul heavy, I wouldn't think that it would be worth having in order to get the lift axle, and I think that few other drivers here would either.

I think the truck has Idaho plates so that would explain the Herd bumper.

And he's on his way to MATS....at least that's what he says.

i ask about this "microblow" in another section of the forum here when cylinder walls was mentioned. A number of years ago the "ptfe" or something like that additive was been used by many car/truck owners, it was so slick it reduced friction in the engine. I used it in my 1978 IH scout with a 304 V8 but it had over 100,000 miles on it and it did help a little. Problem was people were going out buying brand new cars and dumping this slick 50 and everything else in it, when the dealerships figured out what was going on the warranties were being voided do to lack of "break in time" on the engine. The additive which coated ALL the moving parts in the engine prevented the rings from seating into the cylinders in good time, causing noticeable low fuel mileage and lack of power. Dad was still pulling wrenches at a IH, GMC truck dealership during this time, that was one of the things they had to look for in brand new trucks. So once again, why would you make the cylinder walls slick on purpose? I can see doing the Pistons but NOT the cylinders or rings.

Ever see the piddly ### ones that are put on the new trucks? They suck like a hooker. As for the cow catcher, have you seen the damage an elk or moose can do? You obviously don't run a mountain 2 lane road in the dark. Took out an elk last year and only lost the headlight bucket. That "huge cow catcher of a deer guard" is designed for things bigger than a deer. Ever notice how they kick out at the bottom? That is not for looks but rather for attempting to keep the animal from going under the truck and breaking even more crap.

We had a truck in our shop last year that took out an elk.... 12k in damage and over a month to get all the parts.... Especially the custom paint they had on the truck. So if you look at it from the owner's standpoint, that is 12k in damage and 20k in lost revenue for a grand total of 32k in losses. That does not include the hotel and flights for the driver to get home and back. Not to mention whatever he was delivering.

So yeah, idiot owners will continue to protect their investment. Do you see it now?

Well, it seems the only update, since March 7, was posted on FB Wed morning.

It reads: "Yes we are able to salvage the block".

After seeing that head, apparently the block had to be a significantly less degree of corrosion.
I couldn't see that block as being salvageable, if it had corrosion to the degree that the head exhibited.
The updates/info from the 'base camp' seems to be released in thimble sized portions.

I agree. In order to have enough heat to affect the protrusion, seems like you would have already turned that engine into a steam engine, and the below deck measurement would still not make sense.

The fuel nazi's aren't gonna run a 2 lane mountain road because they might loose a little mpg. Cow catchers hurt mpg so they get down on em. The owner spent a ton to go backwards on the cow catcher is how they see it. They get so blinded by fuel being there biggest expense and saying well I'm saving 20 grand a year (round figure) that they can't see painfull reality.

That $20k goes in your pocket every year. I've only squashed Bambi once in 8 years. If I spent more time in moose country, I'd want some more substantial armor up front too.

Yeah it is kinda funny. I drive a '97 w900:biggrin_2555: with a 3406e and 3.78 rears. I put on 700 miles in the last 1.5 days before fueling (gauge does not work) and it took 108 gallons. 50% empty and 100k when loaded. driving from billings to helena to billings to the 3 forks truck stop. Oh and I am running 68 mph. Over 6 mpg average fighting the headwind in livingston the last 2 days. This is not the trailer but it is the truck....

A bumper guard isn't going to cost $20k in fuel, thats ridiculous. In one of the pics on their site, it looks like they're leased to R&R as they're pulling their trailer. R&R is AA&E carrier, so a bumper that may affect fuel mileage by .1 MPG vs being stuck on the side of the road with a load of missiles or grenades is probably a decent idea.
