Currently have 1 year OTR experience, finally hit that year mark and read to switch to LTL local. Right now I have 2 job offers. I can Transfer to Conway Freight Dallas from truck load and keep my benefits and vacation time. Pay is 21.30/hr. OR I can just make a move to FedEX in Fort Worth. I'll make 22/hr.
Have any of you guys on here worked at either or BOTH?
What are the pros and con's of each company?
Anyone know what benefits they offer-details?
What's the turn over rate?
How many hours can I expect to work 1st yr?
Which is better for long term until retirement?
Anything else I should know?
Thanks
Con-Way freight or Fed Ex...TEXAS. 1yr experience. Have you worked either? advice.

I went from Conway Truckload to freight and NONE of my benefits or vacation time followed me. They both have different insurance plans unless that has changed. And you don't just transfer over. You have to apply be interviewed and be hired by them... Worst mistake I have made in my driving career has been working for Conway freight... I lasted there I think 2 months.
pathfinder1361 and zackery2011 Thank this. -
They told me all of my benefits would transfer now. I already have been preapproved to be hired in 2 weeks when I hit my year so it can transfer. What was CWF like? Why did you leave? Did you go back to truckload or someone else?
-
How long ago did you do the transfer?
-
The only thing that transfers is your 401k vesting years.
No seniority.
You will have to start a new 401k account for freight and figure out what to do with truckloads if you have one.
And congatufreakinlations get out of that dump.
Ethier option is an upgrade.zackery2011 Thanks this. -
Yeah my experience hast been so great at TL. Time to go

Two CWF drivers told me they get overtime every day after 8 hours, and all days are over. Said they're around $90K + every year. No turnover at CWF. I don't know what happened with Halpin, but make sure you get all promises on paper. HR I's good at Con-Way.
zackery2011 Thanks this. -
Yeah I hear they both are similar and pay OT after 8, but the one in TX pays after 50. And the ones that been there a long time make 90k+. Anyone know what to expect the very 1st year? Will I be struggling to pay my rent and eating out of cans or do they still make good money and hours?
-
Nope, you'll be making plenty of income for a first year worker. Also, something I noticed repeatedly at Conway Freight terminals: the people in the terminals and docks, the drivers and dispatchers, are all friendly and happy. All the terminals I've overnighted at, or d/h'd at, were joking around, happy, but were working hard. No slackers need apply, and I really think that's important. Work hard, have fun, make money. I don't know about other companies, but Conway Freight is an old, well established, and well run organization. I also don't know if they run thru a union, maybe worth looking at for anybody considering applying.
XtremeFitness Thanks this. -
CWF...pays well to keep Unions out. Starting at low seniority, you'll have the shorter night hauls and work docks more. If you like driving around on a forklift or otherwise cross-docking freight, that would help. If you like day work, they also have city drivers (positions often scooped up by more senior drivers) that deliver in towns with a 28' pup trailer. For City Drivers, if your day is short, you may do some time on the docks afterward. With CWF you'll work a lot of hours.
