I did it with a reefer/dry van outfit basically getting starved out for the year. Its a sacrifice. Your first year will suck, period. Dont do what i did though see if prime tanker division or schneider bulk hires in your area. Two companies you will learn alot from. They will train you right and you will be in demand after 1 year. A lot of tanker companies wont give me a chance because my year isnt in tanks. Something to think about.

I don't think tanker experience matters that much in fuel because it's compartmentalized. The biggest learning curve is not the tanker, it's going from a semi to a truck and trailer.

    moloko Thanks this.

Probably not in fuel. I think the companies that wanted tanker experience were chemical and crude oil. Still, starting off with tanker experience is only going to help you and place you ahead of the pack imo.

I thought they wanted just 1 year of driving experience regardless of type. Thats something to think about, I was wanting to go the reefer route for a year then haul fuel. I might have to change my plans. Thanks for sharing your experience.

It can be anything. Even Arco doesn't require tank experience, it's just preferred. If you want to work for Trimac then yea start out at schneider bulk. I went straight from flatbed to gas.

I'd like to know what happened at Cox. Did you go through the road test or what?

He said the way it works is the application gets sent to corporate (Bakersfield) for approval and that typically takes two weeks. Then if they green light me i do the drug test and physical agility test, and it takes 1 week to get the results back for the drug test. Once thats clear he gives me the heads up to give my boss my two weeks notice. After i leave my company i go to Bakersfield for a 4 day all expenses paid orientation.

Right now its all in corporate's hands. He said he thinks im in good shape and they should approve me but still they have the final word. Its been a week since my interview so one more week and we shall see.

Does anyone know of any companies that pay OT in the San Diego area, hauling fuel? I'm with Coastal now and they pay by the load and miles. As you can guess, I'm struggling. I have one year of hauling crude in Texas, but I'm trying to make it work in So Cal for the family. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
