    Hello,

I have been reading a lot of the posts in the forum and I am finding it very helpful and enlightening.

I am at a point where I need to reinvent myself. I am currently not employed and have not been for some time. My savings is gone and I have started living hand to mouth. I seem to always be reading that good money can be made in CDL driving in the Marcellus Sahle industry. In fact many of the articles talk about new drivers starting out with waste-water and commanding salaries of between $70,000 and $80,000. I seem to be hard pressed to believe this true and I have some questions that I thought could be answered here:

1- How difficult would it be for a new driver to find and be accepted to these opportunities?
2- What is the real deal on starting salaries?
3- Is it true that many of these positions allow for commuting from home and being home on a daily basis?
4- I have seen a lot of information on this and other boards/forums about on the job training options. Do these options exist for waste-water drivers in Marcellus Shale and in the Pittsburgh area?

Any insights, pointers or direction would be greatly appreciated and I am sure I have many more questions but I don't want to bombard the forum with all of them all at once.

Thanks in advance and I am looking forward to hearing what anyone has to say.

    Jay

I'm not familiar with Marcellus down near Pittsburgh but I know jobs are limited but still available near Mansfield and Williamsport. From my own experience it was always 2 or 3 weeks of working your rear off then you'd sit for two or three while they moved a rig. Yes I do believe the money is there but once again you have to do your research and find what companies pay and what companies just want to keep all the money to themselves

The money -is- there, but all the oilfield work is slowing down (At least around Eagle Ford, and the Bakken).

I will try to answer as succinctly as I can.

    1. Right now, it might be fairly hard to get your foot in the door. In my area (south Texas) there are many companies laying off, and going on hiring freezes. The work will pick back up eventually.

    2. Salary depends on a lot of things, for instance where your patch is located. And whether or not housing is included. Housing will play a big part, taking a job that has 10-15k less a year in Salary, but includes housing may actually end up saving you massive amounts of money. For a while around Odessa you couldn't even get a spot to park an RV for under 700$ a month.

It's fairly safe to say that you won't be making 80k your first year. The potential for it may be there, but bear in mind that you will be the new guy. You'll be the first one they send home when they get slow, the last one to get loads.

    3. Some of the positions you could get home every day with, lots of Sand Haulers for instance get home every day (so do a lot of crude drivers). These are going to be in high demand though, if you're near a major metropolis it might be fairly hard to get one of the home daily bids.

    4. I honestly don't know, there were training positions for Water Hauling last year, but the work is slowing down, and they are more likely getting a little bit more picky on who they hire.

The best way to get a real bead on what is offered for you in your area, is to send in a few pre-applications and talk to the recruiters that call you. Before you do it make a list of things you want to ask them, and make sure you ask. Something like this:

    1. Salary
    2. Hometime
    3. Housing Provided
    4. Benefits
    5. Training
