I discovered a new thing to hate about the 387 I've been assigned. It has a idle shutdown thing after like 5 minutes. Not cute when its 90 or more outside. I so far have been unsucessful in managing to get it to stop.

The cruise control only has set and resume. So thats out. Any other ideas before i buy a cinderblock for the gas pedal...

It's in the computer setup. A mechanic may be able to access the software and turn it off, they'd have to have the password to get into it though. I drove a Freightliner about 3 weeks ago with this same problem. It had a Cummins engine and the mechanic tried to edit the idle options but he didn't have the right password for the system. He called support, but the password they gave him didn't work either.

Does it have a clutch? Does it give you a warning before it shut down? I've heard that when the light flashes press the clutch. I really don't know.

There should be a light that flashes on the dash to alert of the idle shutdown. If you depress the clutch or tap the throttle it should disengage the shutdown sequence. Of course this is dependant upon the program settings.

The simplest way to find out how your truck is set up is to ask someone in your company shop. They will know how it works. Short of that you can look at the manual that came with the truck. The manual will tell you everything you want to know about the truck and its components.

I have consulted the manual to no avail it was my first point of reference before I came to ask you guys. I can get it to stop shutting off by hitting the gas but I am more worried about the times I wont be here, my pet will be alone and the truck off its 100 degrees today, the truck shut itself off when I went into a truck stop to grab a snack and when I came out it was 116 in the truck.

I am at the terminal now telling them to make it stop or get me a new truck >.>

How about looking for a fuse diagram and pulling the auto shut off fuse?

I have no idea where it would be on a Pete, but I know there should be something like that.

I would venture to guess your rig is newer than my 379 but this may work. My engine shuts down after 8 minutes. I tried to get my shop to either over-ride it/disable it/ or tell me how to do it myself. They wouldn't do it but at the time, I strictly ran in So-Cal and used it for tugging a low-side. CA kinda frowns on those who bypass or manipulate the ecm settings.
Anyways I'm rambling, I found out by accident that if you bump up the idle speed up a tick, it'll run all day and night keeping you warm or cool and burning the fuel.
I only do that if it's either Palm Springs Hot or cold like where Brickman lives.:biggrin_25523:
I like it cool but I'm not as tough as Brickman.:biggrin_25523::biggrin_25514:

Our freightliners are the same way. However setting the cruise control keeps it idling for as long as you want. I don't understand why your CC wouldn't work.
