Cops and EMS people deal with the effects of wearing/not wearing seat belts many times each week. I challenge any who feel seat belts don't save limbs and lives, and provide for better control of a crashing vehicle, to find a cop or EMT who agrees with you.

I always wear my seatbelt while driving, and also a condom, to always be ready just in case. OK, I'm joking about the seat belt part.

Back in the very early 90's a few years before I started driving commercial, I was involved in a nasty collision in which my car spun out on an icy road right into the path of an oncoming car, which impacted the right side, I was at 35 mph when I slid, and was still a hard enough impact where it twisted the driver's seat to the right and my hip bent the shifter. Luckily I walked away from it, as did the other driver, with only some soreness. If I hadn't been wearing that belt I would've easily been ejected through the passenger window of pinned on that side of the wreckage. To this day I won't start going down the road with that belt on. if people want to believe they're that indestructible and their "personal freedom" is more important than not getting turned into hamburger, fine. I just wouldn't want to be the one who has to tell that person's family that their son/daughter/mom/dad was killed because they thought they were fearless.

    (sarcasm alert)

The problem wasn't the driver wasn't wearing a seat belt. It was complete failure for trip planning. He should have had the cooler with the beers in easy reach so he didn't have to unbuckle.

I always have worn it out of habit myself. It's just a common sense kind of thing.

I've never driven without a seat belt. Saved at least my legs if not my life when I was in a head on collision at the age of 19.

Seatbelts = generally a good thing. Should they be mandated?? Not convinced on that one. In the news article BigDon referenced the "driver" had issues with controlled substances. The seatbelt thing was kinda minor. He won't make either mistake again!!

I don't use my seatbelt all the time while driving my truck, but as soon as i get in my car it's automatic i buckled up!

Maybe if the put some kind of buzzer or some annoying warning sound i would use it all the time.

I use to have an anti theft device in my pick up truck where you had to buckled up in order to start the engine.

I have a very good theory about why some people chose not to wear a seatbelt and its due to their belly.

When people are really big, they say the seat belt bothers them or that it doesn't fit right.

    ...and I'm not bull$hitting.
