Transmission oil cooler bypass

    Yup, that's what I had done. New hose made 1 1/2' long and just looped back onto itself.

    We do it all the time on our rebuilt and exchange units depending on the owner or drivers preference and have been in business for 43 years and never seen a problem. If you have an 1850 or higher torque engine or haul heavy (100000 or above) or spend a lot of time in the low side or on steep grades than you should replace it. The tube oil to water coolers are junk and I would never own one they crack inside leaking engine coolant into the oil destroying the transmission with rust.

    I drove my truck for 14 years came from factory without a trans cooler. (super 10 ) when mine went out, put in a used super 10 that had at one time a cooler. the shop just put a hose looped from one end to the other. never had any problems. would like it to be cooler, also would like the outside temp to be cooler too, but truck is fine.

    What kinda bass ackward advice is this? Without know what he hauls, you just gave some really crappy advice. I would err on the side of caution than one size fits all with the no cooler option.
    so-
    You just contradicted yourself. so if he hauls heavy it is needed ?? Or would a heavy hauler trans blow up with no cooler? Eaton, Rockwell spend hundreds if not millions of dollars on research/development to put out a good product. Like they say on the CB, you drives your truck, i drives my truck. I will be passing you while you are broke down on the shoulder.

    Keep it original. Its there for a reason.

    How is this bad advise?
    I prob just saved him a bunch $ and time.
    I never said anything about a one size fits all cooler option. If you read my post I said , if all you do is 80,000lb 5 axle work then they are really not needed .

    I only post advise if I know what I'm talking about and have had first hand experience with the subject at hand.
    Not just pull #### out of my ### because I heard it from sombody or I read it somewhere on the Web.
    You must be real paranoid if you think a trans is going to just granade and leave a guy on the side of the road because of hot oil temps.It will however shorten the life of the trans over time if continued to be run like that.
    I did say to keep an eye on his temps just to make sure everything will be okay.

    Read fullermans post, he knows what he's talking about.After all he's got 43 years in the gear industry. But I can tell you'll just argue that too.

    I appreciate the vote of confidence but when i said 43 years I was referring to how long my company has been in business. As of three months ago I am the only fuller mack spicer rockwell builder at my establishment and and these jobs are the bulk of our business, with that being said I have seen a lot of things come and go and don't let the dealer or anyone else fool you, unless you are hauling heavy you will be fine deleting your cooler. If you have an oil to water cooler you run the risk of an internal cooler crack leaking water into your transmission and I would not own one. As far as I'm concerned I would only own an air to oil cooler with electric fan and toggle switch and only if I hauled heavy or spend a lot of time off road in the low side with moderate to heavy loads. If you run higher temps change your oil once a year and your transmission will last longer than the next guy. If you run at lower temps change your oil every two years and the same thing will happen. 50% of the jobs I get could have been prevented by a shorter service interval. Fleets trade their trucks in after the warranty is up to dealers and they never service anything other than the engine and sell it to the next guy and he thinks they serviced the entire drive train and three or so years later he and I become friends.

    Had a 93 Freightliner cabover with a rto14613 with no cooler. Replaced trans with rtlo16913a and bypassed the cooler (donor truck had cooler) ran for 3 years then driver called one day on Eisenhower worried about temp...middle of 90 deg. day. Over 230 deg. He pulled over to let cool .....ran truck for another month then retrofitted a cooler. 3 years later....sold truck with same oil no problems........... If it were me, I'd replace the cooler at your EARLIEST convenience, no sooner!

    Replaced mine on a 359 Pete for $70 off E-Bay. Cheap insurance-heats a killer.
