Oh yeah, flying cars could become more of a reality when trucks are automated (catch my drift)... corny as it is, hi tech.

I thought by this day and age when I was a child that regular citizens would be living in space. We aren't to the point yet where a truck will be driving itself unmanned going down the highway or managing city streets. It wont happen in my lifetime. They cant even make a truck that will get 20 miles to the gallon and this is 2015. We are not as advanced as many think we are.

No. They can't get rid of drivers. Too much can go wrong to list here. Too much common sense to navigate through such as construction, low bridges, accidents etc.. etc.. Then there are lawsuits where the responsibility would lie 100% with the owner of said vehicle-no driver to blame. Add a little hazmat or a wide load and no one to blame? Not going to happen.

    hunted Thanks this.

It won't happen till after we see unmanned trains, planes, and cars. There are a lot less problems to overcome with those modes of transport.

No and the ones they are developing so far don't even attempt to replace the driver.

Plus, the ones they are developing now will not be available to the market in less than 10 years. And they still require a human rider / driver.

Also, I'm sure the cost per unit will be extremely high in the onset.

They said we were going to have flying cars by the year 2000

Let's just wait until every investor getting suckered into these future technologies realizes that it won't ever happen

There are too many decisions to be made too fast, based on experience, to trust a computer. The only computer capable of handling the changing info fast enough to safely control a motor vehicle is between the driver's ears. I know, a lot of those don't always function properly but I would never trust a computer to drive for me.
