safety guestion

    Went in for pm which they put some new steers on and added 2 tires on the right side rear which have only about 10% tread compared to about 80 % of the rest of rear tires..can someone tell me the logic in this,can this in anyway be dangerous?

    If the 2 they put on have considerably less tread than the other 2 on the same axle it could be too much for the differential to compensate for.

    If they have at least 2/32's of depth (or a tiny bit more, like 3/32's) , they are legal.

    Logic..?? Only Spock can determine logic.

    Sounds like they got your tractor confused with a trailer...maybe they just didn't know the difference. 10% tread should be reserved for a trailer rescue!

    dual tires (2 tires next to each other) should be about the same size or tread wear. 4 tires on the same axle should also be the same size , don't have to be but best for the drive axle differential if they are,,as for the front and rear drive axle they can have different size (tread wear) but it is not good when the power divider is engaged because the tires on the two drive axles will rotate at different rates . for example if the tires on the front drive have 80% rubber and the tires on the rear drive have 20% the rear tires will go around more than the front axle tires,,
    Most drivers do not know that normally when the power divider is NOT engaged the power goes to the rear drive axle. The power divider when engaged will provide power to the front and rear drive axle,,
    Best all around for the truck to have tires matched as best as possible,,It is best to rotate front and rear drive tires to get even wear.
    Many carriers don't care because they will sell off the truck under 500,000 miles.
    If you are the truck owner best to match the tires and rotate drive tires front to rear and rear to front about every 75,000miles,,Many use truck owners will replace all 8 drive tires at the same time taking the tires will tread left on the front drive axle and finish wearing them out on the trailer.
    Same with steers,one side usually the left front tire wears out before the right front tire.
    I used to save the front tire with tread left when I replaced my steers and saved it for a spare that could be used on any position , drive, trailer or steer.

    Both side by side on same axle? No pic so my concerns would be the spider gears. Might be a lot of binding.

    It's a good thing they didn't to the back right duals too. If they did, the right side of the tractor would be an hour later getting to California.

    I once had a tire replaced somewhere out in the middle of nowhere in NM. I think the city was Egypt or Afghanistan or something like that.

    4th axle passenger side, inner tire blew. Only 11k in the trailer. 105F. They slapped on a spare with considerably less tred, I didn't know any better. That spare was not fully touching the ground the same as all the other tires. This wore it out quickly and it blew again eventually.

    I don't have that super single crap. I have traditional duals. But still.
