Sounds like it's starving for fuel under some circumstances. How are the fuel screens, fuel lines, filters and pumps?

I found a place out of Florida that for 700 bucks they send you a refurbished DDEC III with "top of the line parts" and "detroits latest programs" and it's life time warranty. I think I'm going to try that. I've thrown about 10k at it. What's another $700?!

watch with the latest detroit programs, you don't want the low nox codes put in, though I doubt any aftermarket e.c.m. tuner would go that route. just say'in.
Maximiliano Thanks this. -
I have a 98 pete 379 with a 12.7 Detroit in it, been having this problem for months now. the problem is intermittent some days its great some days it acts up, right as you start rolling in the the throttle at lower speed and low rpm "1500 to 1600" it will start to pop and stumble and blow whiter grey smoke out the stacks it smells of raw fuel. does not do it at high way speeds. so far i have replaced the suction lines, filter head, new filter, new fuel pump, new map sensor, check check valve on return line and 0.80 restricted 90 on return. currently pulled all injectors out and re oringing them and putting new cups in, injectors have about 50,000 on them along with the entire motor, any help would be appreciated.

I've got a 99 379 w/a Detroit too. What you are experiencing is nothing new to us longtime Detroit guys. What's happening is the engine randomly loses partial prime, stumbles, farts, pops, jumps, jerks, shakes, tosses white/blue/grayish smoke out the stacks, regains full prime & run on like nothing even happened. There isn't anything you can fix to cure this Detroit "quirk". It's just one of those strange things a Detroit will do whenever it feels like it.
