Hi all ! I now have my Ontario AZ and have recently graduated from 5th Wheel Training Institute PDTI . I do not have a FAST card but was looking for a carrier that would train or mentor a new driver in Canada lanes only.
Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

I am based in Ottawa but could relocate for the right opportunity.

Why did you choose 5th Wheel when you are located in Ottawa?

It was the closest PDTI school. Free accomodations, highly recommended

Do you have a passport? Is there any reason you cannot enter the U.S? I have not even started my AZ course yet and I have conditional job offers from 4 companies and I live in Ottawa like yourself.

You do not need a FAST card to cross the border. Just a passport.

FAST cards are only for FAST approved loads, which are usually done through companies like Toyota & Ford.

Very very few truckers have a FAST pass. Even fewer companies who actually need you to have one. It does not get you across the border any FASTER and in fact is probably slower than just using a passport. If you do long haul, make sure you truck has a fax/scanner in it, otherwise your life will consist of faxing papers and looking for truck stops all the time, so you can fax more papers after the first five faxes you tried didnt go through.

For new drivers, you do not need to start off doing long haul. It may seem easier as the big carriers all do it, but, shop yourself around, plenty of companies who offer local work and I highly recommend ALWAYS getting paid by the hour, anything else is a downright scam in my book.

If one company you goto does not offer local work, ask them who does in your area, the trucking world is hyper connected and very small, everyone knows everyone.

I was hired by Road King & Logistic based out of Toronto. I received a week of paid training. I do short haul during the week $19.20 hour and they get me home to Ottawa every 2nd weekend w loads to Montreal & Ottawa. 40 cents per mile.
I stay in my truck in our yard. They a great company and they support me 100%.
I am not treated like a number

Do they allow you to take the truck home to Ottawa? Where do you park it?
