    Hi,
I am new to trucking and wanted to try it out without making a substantial investment. I have been thinking about renting a truck from Ryder or Penske for a week, hiring a driver and seeing if there is enough profit in this to make it work. The question that I have is that many brokers immediately ask for my MC Number. If I was just renting a truck for a week would I be able to use the Ryder or Penske MC number or would I have to apply for my own for my company. I am based out of Houston, TX

    Thanks

I want to be a cardiologist. Can I just rent someone else's medical tools & do a heart transplant or maybe just put in a couple of stents or maybe I'll just stick to prescribing meds... just to see if its profitable, before getting my medical licence? I mean, I gotta know this is gonna work before I put in 12 years of time & expenses for medical school, until I know if I like it.

    Same thing.

Honestly I'm not being a smart###. Both fields are heavily regulated & no way you can just go haul a load to see if you like it. My scenario just gives you a good prospective on why you cant.
My advice, get in the business (industry) in some form (job) & see if you like it, if its profitable for you, what will make it profitable & why. Then once your "educated" make your decision.
    Hope this helps,... good luck.

The reality is that trucking is a business and the metrics are very simple, it is the spread between cost per mile and income per mile if you are outsourcing (hiring drivers). So based on that it is very simple to calculate your costs...certain costs are fixed, others are variable depending upon the job. I want to see if the spread is sufficient where it is worth my time to deal with paperwork and finding freight etc. There is a saying, work smart, not hard. I would rather make a little less money, sit in my office and hire a driver to drive my truck. Or I can go out and spend weeks away from my family, develop heart disease, hypertension, diabetes etc and make a little bit more. Let's keep our smarta$$ comment to our selves and help everyone maximize their revenue.

I hope you have a LOT of money to rent out a truck, trailer and insurance, cuz I can tell you, it ain't cheap, and they charge by the American dollar and cents, not by any metric system.

You'll be needing some insurance too. Liability, physical damage, cargo. Oh, work comp too if you're hiring a driver.

If you want to haul freight without the hassles of insurance and federal regs, I suggest uship.com

This is sounding like Pacific Islander. And to the OP.... I drive company, home every night, enjoy the weekends with my family, live healthy, and still live comfortably. As does a lot of drivers here. You get all that jibber jabber by letting yourself go and suck down down a few too many corn dogs at the pilot and sipping a triple x slushy down at the loves. Either side of trucking is very profitable, but you sound like you know what your talking about. So do exactly what you are thinking.
