I have a water cooled 13 speed that seems to be running hot. Going through Wyoming on 25 the engine coolant temp seems to be heating up quicker than normal. I dont even have to make full power at 60mph and the engine fan will come on. I don't have a transmission gauge so I use a gun. At the top of a hill that I took it easy going up the transmission was 240 and the diffs were around 150. Usually actual temp is higher. For example the engine oil pan will read 160 when it's actually 175.

I'm not sure if the transmission is entirely at fault, but I did put in 185 thermostats in the engine recently and the water pump is only 2 years old. It's a detroit tuned by leon.

Hi allan, I'll try. 1st, a water cooled 13 speed? Unless something has changed, I never heard of engine coolant going to the transmission. I believe you have 2 issues here. The engine fan coming on could be a plugged radiator inside or clogged fins on the outside. The temp on the trans seems about normal for a hard pull up a long grade with a load. I suppose if the engine gets hot, it may cause the trans to get hotter. Some say synthetic oil in the trans makes them run cooler and shift better. I've seen some run auxiliary trans coolers with limited success. If it's a hot day, I wouldn't worry about the trans as much as the cooling of the motor. Anybody? Good luck.

Most transmissions are water cooled. The cooler sits on top. The pull wasn't hard because I was backing way out of it less than 20 psi boost, plus I forced the engine fan on the whole way up. Just seems high. Eaton manuals say you don't want to stay at 250. I have no doubt it was higher.

Outside temp is 90. 35k on the trailer.

I've gunned it a few times and don't ever remember above 200.

I say that is pretty normal temps. in that kind of ambient temps. 25 in wyo has always been rough with temps with the cross winds you get instead of with head on wind. cross winds will actually pull air away from your radiator. plus the higher elevations. just make sure the trans cooler isn't dumping antifreeze into the trans.

The eaton on my prostar stays around 180 under heavy load, Via the gauge on the dash.

They still have sae 50 but there's no air cooler. It's a small water cooler by the shifter.

It's not water cooled. A transmission has no water jackets. It DOES have a transmission cooler that recirculates the transmission oil through the little radiator-looking thingy. I would suggest that either the cooler is clogged or you have a collapsed line or airflow to the cooler itself may be blocked by something.

Wow. Didn't know that. Mine has an external cooler but has the sae 50 running through it. When did they start with the water cooler?
