I would have a number on the truck as well as the trailer just for verification purposes such as in your DOT new entrant safety audit, in my opinion it just makes things clear and upfront about the truck and trailer your operating in your log books

A truck number is not required.

Thanks for looking that up Oscar, I too know it's not required but just for the ease of things in my opinion, truck 001 is my Volvo just say, get pulled over or something and have 001 on my truck and 001 in my log, just an opinion and a preference but once again thanks for looking that up!!

395.8 requires a truck number on your logs:

(6) 24-hour period starting time (e.g. midnight, 9:00 a.m., noon, 3:00 p.m.);
(7) Main office address;
(8 ) Remarks;
(9) Name of co-driver;
(10) Total hours (far right edge of grid);

You can just use your license plate number on the logs.

sometimes when your they want truck and trailer numbers at loading facility as well. i have had numbers. my trucks already had numbers on them when i bought them so i just used the same truck number that was already on the truck same with the trailers.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
legally, you do not need a truck # visible and the # you use on your log can be any #. YOU know the # (in your head) . Nothing says you have to post a # on your truck. BUT, since everything's number orientated everywhere you go, well, put a # on there.

Remember, you need to keep a vehicle repair file, a scheduled maintenance file, a log, inspection reports, and all other paperwork in order. Just put a number on the front of the hood. Done. Your new entrant auditor will love it.

Years ago, I had a friend whose truck number was " OU812". His next truck number was "RU469". The latter was his Freightliner Century I drove for him. You could tell the people that got that.

Thank you all for the helpful feedback. I'm aware of logs/registration requirements...just sort of unclear about putting a number on the truck besides the obvious ie. USDOT, MC, KYU and VIN. You all are the best! God bless and keep the shiny side up!
