Thanks for all the information everyone. I'm thinking about finding an otr job or something local for now and hope maybe oil prices go back up in a few years but that's a long shot.
Looking for advice on getting into the oilfields

That said in Texas you can make 50k+ a year running regional or dedicated. I'm currently try running produce out of San Antonio, home every night/morning and gross $1100 a week.
And it's a whole lot less demanding than the 15 hour days I was doing in the oilfields. I enjoyed the money brotha, but when the well ran dry I bailed. I don't even think my old company (Stevens Tanker) is hiring at the moment in the south Texas area. It's slow. Really, really slow.
If your located in Dallas there is a whole #### pile of local and regional jobs that pay well and get you home everyday or every weekend. Maybe this kind about the oilfields when/if it booms again.
Just my $. 02

You're near Dallas, so go get your CDL with CDL Test Truck or whatever they are called for $500 instead of wasting cash on BS trucking schools. Then go apply for every company at DFW airport.
If you want a job in the oilfield you need to move to the oilfield. Saying you are willing won't cut it at this point. -
up in Alberta may be different but I doubt it.
up here there are so many qualified people out of work that a employer would be stupid to hire a rookie. the only reason a employer would hire a rook would be so he can pay them less, in which case you aren't making what you would want to either. if you've got a job in the patch you'll make good money but you are more balls to the walls than ever! I have never ran so hard as I have these last couple months and am doing it to make alot less than I used to.
I just hired a driver, heck I think my ad online may still be up.... and within 30 minutes of putting it up I had more resumes then I would ever need. I wouldn't have even looked at one that didn't have 100% of what I was looking for.
here's my honest advice..... get a job hauling pipe (or anything) flatdeck from Texas to ft mac. that way you'll be making good money and be able to build a relationship or 2 along the way with guys in the patch and you'll be able to keep your ear open about what's going on.
with the 60 resumes I got in, I ended up hiring a guy who hadn't even applied. -
Go look at the per barrel oil price, and reconsider again when it goes above $50ish. This isn't really the time to get in on an industry that takes a pounding when the oil/gas prices drop.
We're only hiring right now to fill vacancies left by people quitting or getting fired. And, if you don't have 2 years with a CDL and at least one year hauling a liquid tanker, you're highly unlikely to be considered at all. This gig can be very rude to novices. -
Don't worry Iranian oil will be in the market in two months. China is slowing down too. How much will oil drop?

You're a little late in the game. You might want to wait until gasoline goes back to $4 a gallon
