Not much work is bid on as far as dump trucking goes at least in my area. Only stuff guys really bid is for the government, hauling materials for the park service and hauling rock for the Army Corps of Engineers for levees. Hourly rates seem to work a lot better.

If you don't know anybody in the excavation side of construction I would imagine you would have a pretty tough time getting started up.

If you're dead set on being a dump truck driver though, doesn't sound like you've got much experience at coming from hauling cars.

Can you spread gravel? Navigate through a freshly staked job without taking stakes out? Pave asphalt without falling out of the hopper or tearing up the base? Chase a chipper around all day? Put a end dump in places it shouldn't / doesn't want to go?

The bigger of a truck you get the less 'tricky' stuff you'll have to do, but it may not hurt to take a job for a company that already does this work to get yourself some experience and see if it's what you actually want to do.

All you have to do is call a few different dump truck outfits and ask them what their rates are. Just act like a potential customer and ask for rates for different types of services.
