I have found that parking the grain wagon and going back to dry vans work very good for us. We haul for a lot of the same customers on both sides. They pay more to haul grain in bags, on pallets in a dry van, then for the same grain in the hopper.

Im from northern iowa the mecca of grain country. What i know and also see as i drive hazmat tanker to ethanol plants is basically its rich farmers that haul it for lil to nothing. One cause they are board but mostly its to keep their hired hand or son busy and employed year round.

Got mixed emotions on this one because I started out as one of those hands. I think the farmers should be required to run the same plates as the MC's, the same insurances, the same CDL's and then they might not be so willing to haul commercial grain. They are really only supposed to be hauling their own product to and from the market on those farm tags, but we all know they are hauling the commercial stuff as well. I don't receive government subsidies for my company, while most of them do, not jealous, I just don't like paying for others lack of business sense. I also don't like paying for others to sit around and do nothing (that is not the farmer by the way).

In the state that I live, they dont get away with the farm tags...the fine is quite steep and they watch very closely. We are one of the few states left that doesnt rquire a dot # for intrastate shipments, even commercial. Ive had just as much problem with rates in the feed ingredient side. The rates are really bad, considering the load/unload times.

not O/O just employee . Got no choice . How ever my pay did go up a bit I think this month but hard for me to tell since I do not know exactly what all goes into each check . they pile up tickets from several weeks so I could be fooled . So far it is about 24k a year average .this is not in my living range . Maybe it will continue to get better . I am trying to stick it out and see as I would really like at least 1 year in 5 states experience . But trying to buy truck and O/A so this may change .

You got that right ! I was just unloading at a coop in St Francis Ks . The railroad tracks are in the way and out of service . guy said they were removing them starting at other end of town . told me they were owned by the poor starving guy Warren Buffet . Said he shut the line down because he made more money off of Gov subsidies that way . thank god we taxpayers live in a country where we are allowed to give aid to people who have almost nothing, like Warren Buffet . I hope he has a hot meal today .

A guy I used to work for here in wichita went into grain . he hauled regional and made about 5k a week and went to home most every night make 2500 . loads out of Gavilon in Wichita . that is what he told me .
1.10 a mile is sure not going to pay the bills with all them miles you are running . O/O told me yesterday that 3500 to 4 K a week is required to get by .

Yeah, 4k is kind of a minimum. The rates I saw out ok Ks, Ok, Tx, would no way support those numbers....not even close.
