I have found that parking the grain wagon and going back to dry vans work very good for us. We haul for a lot of the same customers on both sides. They pay more to haul grain in bags, on pallets in a dry van, then for the same grain in the hopper.

Im from northern iowa the mecca of grain country. What i know and also see as i drive hazmat tanker to ethanol plants is basically its rich farmers that haul it for lil to nothing. One cause they are board but mostly its to keep their hired hand or son busy and employed year round.

In the state that I live, they dont get away with the farm tags...the fine is quite steep and they watch very closely. We are one of the few states left that doesnt rquire a dot # for intrastate shipments, even commercial. Ive had just as much problem with rates in the feed ingredient side. The rates are really bad, considering the load/unload times.
