    Hi,
How long do you have to store the bills of lading? I am an owner operator and I have a "full load "of old pods, over 5 years old. Is there any rule on how long you have to store them for the IRS or DOT?

I would get a Neat scanner and scan them to your computer (with backup).

Yup 7 years. Filed by year with appropriate tax documents kept in banker boxes. I scan all of them and back up the computer.

Last 30 days in the cab.

Why would you keep the last 30 days in the cab?

Available for inspection with logs. Easy to file away by the month too.

You do know you're only required to show the previous seven days? My rule is never give them more than required; you never know what problems might pop up. YMMV.

I still have logs and B/L from when I owned my own truck. And I sold it and went to a company truck more than 10 years ago...don't ask me why. JIC I have to CMA I guess

    ^This! (for the driver)

    Officer: Fuel receipts?
Me: I get a statement mailed from my fuel card.

    Previous BOLs?
Already sent them in for invoicing.

    Toll receipts?
    Have EZpass

As for the original question, the carrier needs to keep a copy for 6 months as supporting documents for logs. Other than that the fmcsa doesn't care.

The IRS can go back 7 years under normal circumstances (there is no limit if they can prove fraud).
